computer auto-connects

I posted this over in networking but none of the suggestions helped.

I am having a problem with on of my computers automatically logging on to the internet for no apparent reason.
I have a small network of 4 computers all running windows XP pro. they connect to the internet thru the main computer on a dial up connection. I have isolated the problem to one computer, an HP E-Vectra. I have scanned all files with norton antivirus, and have aauto-update turned off. I can,t identify the application or process that is causing this. Can anyone help?

not quite sure I'm understanding the problem. Other than 4 computers connected to the net through one dial up connection! :Q
Wow, that must be slow.

Anyways, so upon boot up this one pc makes the 1 pc that connects to the net TO dial up if it is not already?

I'd make sure that the start up programs on the pc don't require a net connection (ex. any instant messaging software which a setting of load AND sign on on computer startup, ect.)

right click on internet explorer (on the desktop), goto properties. Then click on the connection tab...make sure it doesn't say "connect whenever there's no connection" or something like that. You might want to set it to "manual connect".

Only one computer connects to the net at any one time. The HP vectra and computer c pretty muck just run seti 24/7.
I have 2 nic's in computer A and use it as a router. I have checked the start-up files in the vectra and the only appplication it runs is
Seti. I stll can't figure it out.

I have this going on also.

Two computers, both on XP Pro. Connects automatically in a very random fashion. Not sure which computer is initiating the connection. I can not seem to determine a pattern.

However, the other morning, my wife was sitting at her computer desk reading and a dial-up was initiated. Both computers were "asleep" at the time. The scribbles she wrote down make it look like NAV is the culprit.

I've got to believe that XP Pro has got the tools built into it to diagnose this problem. I spent $50 on one of those Que books on XP Pro only to discover that nothing in the Administrative Tools is even covered.

Anway, I share your pain brother. Our computers are on 24/7 and it upsets me to come home to find that we've been online for 6 or 8 hours or whatever the case may be.

ah yes, I didn't even think of that... norton's antivirus does periodic checks to see if you have the latest virus definitions and updates... possibly that is the culprit...

surely there is a setting to make it not look for updates automatically

Yes, I've been using NAV for years. I had these two computers networked using ICS with 98SE prior to going to XP Pro. My settings are the same as I was using. No problems with 98.

It's a mystery.

I currently have nav running but live update is off the problem remains.

You can isolate the problem by either disconnecting from the network or turning each computer off 1 at a time until you find the culprit.

Try checking in the registry, to see what is loading in your "run" folder. When I've seen this at work, there is something running that doesn't show up with a ctrl-alt-del. Gator, kazaa, a messenging program, a worm or trojan, a version of ad spyware, are some of the things that can trigger a dial up.
