First: I agree 100% with Jteef. Especially the idea of not centering the system around the 'puter. Treat that as just another source.

DSTA have you ever heard of a setup like that connected to a computer?

Well, sadly not the Maggies/T+A combo I was dreaming about in the previous post, but I've listended to a few stand alone "MP3 decks" (like this) and soundcards on a decent HiFi system (Infinty Renaissance 90 with heavily modded NAD amp). It's a lot better than I thought, especially well encoded MP3 at higher bit rates (160 and up) is really not that bad. Definitly good enough once you stop listening to the equipment and shift the focus on listening to the music ;). I think it might be even better on more conventional speakers that are less "in your face" than the Inifnity (or worse, the Magnepan).

Jteef is right once again about the DAC part though: analog out on prosumer or worse sound cards sucks (IMO), digital out to a DAC (built-in, Sony DAT recorder) sounded much better.

WRT DIY, and to recomend you some kind of "starting point":

I really enjoy tinkering with HiFi stuff, but building a DIY system from the ground up is going to be quite a challenge, and I think it's a good idea to have some kind of reference to be able to judge if your DIYing is going the right way sound quality wise.

Perhaps some cheap, used components would be the best bet for starters. Say a pair of clean two way speakers from Bowers & Wilkins and a no frills integrated amp by Rotel, Mission or Harman Kardon. That should be available for very little money used, and you'll get an idea what an entry level HiFi setup can do.
