CompUSSR is LAME!

Today I went to CompUSSR... only to find this HUGE banner on their front door... saying if they are getting the NT Authority shutdown crap, bring the computer in... and they'll fix it for $99!!!!

Instead of telling people to just goto windowsupdate... they charge them $99!!!

lol i think when no one's looking.. i'm gonna take a sharpie.. and cross out the $99 and put in $0, and put windowsupdate link on the bottom 😀

People just want it fixed...some people can't even follow a simple link....I'm not joking at all.

If you want, just put a sign outside your own house charging $50...no shame in that.

Someone remind me when CompUSA turned into a non-profit organization? Oh yeah, they didn't

If people are stupid enough to bring their systems in a pay the $99 then more power to CompUSSR for luring them in....... You're all just upset that you didn't think of it first and make a mint off of Average Joe's stupidity/idiocy.

First, I agree that is an outrageous charge for "just" the Blaster update.

But:
(1) Isn't that CompUSAs default service charge for any computer work?
($50/hr with a 2 hour minimum?)

If you've looked at the average users system...
(the ones who not only don't understand windows update; but who haven't done a chkdsk or defrag since
they first bought the machine, and who think that installing Gator is a good way to surf the web...)
...then you might think that taking an extra hour to do basic maintenance is a necessary evil before you
can even be sure any patches you apply are going to make a difference to the overall stability (or instability)
of the computer.

(2) Even if they did were just telling people to just goto windowsupdate, half of those people would be dragging
thier computers in anyway, on the assumption that compusa's staff are better connected, equipped, and knowledgeable to apply that patch and others to thier systems.

(3) As chocoruacal points out, having a banner telling poeple to go somewhere else for help doesn't do much to
get people into the stores.
Although, if they were smart, they'd have set up a special update area, where they only charge like 25 bucks
to do patches (if thats all that is needed), just to get lots of people into the store where they can see all the
other "sale" items and new software/hardware on the shelves.

Not to mention that the folks that have money will spend it.

Personally, I'm appalled at how much they'll charge to do installs and things.

But... a thing is worth whatever the thing will bring. (i.e. If no one used em for installs, tech service, etc., they'd drop their price)

You could set up a little tent in front of the parking lot with "info on how to fix your computer with the worm". Or have business cards made up, do house calls for $50 or something.

Sounds normal. There are some people who can't figure out how to do a windows update. I spent 3 hours trying to talk my dad through it and finally gave up and gave my friend a call to go over and fix it up for him. Imagine trying to tell someone to goto the desktop and they just can't find it. Some people just aren't computer literate.

Tell me about it....years ago when I was working desktop support I called a user to try and talk threm through something. At one point I asked them to tell me what was on their desktop and they told me "A clock, a coffee cup, a few pencils, some paper" I thought some angry things then calmed down and told them I would be right over to look at the problem myself.

CompUSSR would be much cooler if they TRIED to be competitive on their products... They sell motherboards there for $230 that NewEgg sells for $110 shipped to your door. Hell, they could probably buy all of their products from NewEgg and sell them at their current store prices and still make a killing. I hate that store and wish it would go out of business.....or change its practices.

yeah, let's see how many other stupid names we can come up for successful businesses. How bout "Beast Buy" or "Micro$uck"

If you don't like it then who cares? Nobody is forcing the people to spend the $99.

They're being competitive for their market: brick and mortar computer stores. Not everybody can wait a few days for their mothorboard to come in the mail...

Damn that capitalist party line! :|

Agreed, thats so 90's!!! 😛

But whats MORE lame is that applying the windowsupdate patch like he said doesn't FIX the shutdown problem because it doesn't remove the worm, it only closes the security hole.

Perhaps he should go to compusa and pay $99 to get some help! 😕

99% of the public will never buy a motherboard by itself. They buy pre-packaged systems.

What is wrong with AT that we have soo many ANTI PROFIT people here. are you morons COMMUNISTS??

WTF do you expect, COMPUSA is there to MAKE MONEY. and guess what DESPITE your protests, they continue to make money.

B1tching about customer service etc i can understand b1tching about high prices is just stupid, if you dont' like it, DON'T BUY FROM THEM.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but the USSR was communist. And communist is pretty much as far from capitalist as you can get. So overcharging for products would not be too communist, would it.

Is it too much to ask that retarded name calling actually makes sense? 😀
