My uncle's Dell died and he took it to CompUSSR. They said it the mobo was dead and that it would be ~$1000 to replace. I know theres markup + service and all, but $1000?

When I heard this, I said I can replace it.
Total cost: ~$80 for a mATX PIV mobo from newegg.

You mean two new computers, that will play all modern games decently.

Check the power plugs on the motherboard and PSU before you go buy a replacement. If it's old enough, it could be a proprietary dell board, in which case you'd need a new PSU as well. No, I'm not entirely sure what you should look for, hit google for that.

I wouldn't go that far.

An AMD 64 with a gig of ram and the very latest of everything inside

They just pass the price of the part from the used/junked out parts dealer on to you.

Make sure it is a normal screw mount ATX mobo (some dells use trays/tabs) or factor in the price of a new case and psup.

WTF? Call Dell yourself and order a replacement board. They seem to be fair with parts' pricing, at least in my experience.

not so fast... first state exactly what computer your uncle had, and we will then tell you what the best course of action is....

it may be cheaper to replace it.

----> just bought (2 mos ago) two dell P4 w/256mb ram, 2.6 ghz w/533mhz bus for 339 each.

If it's an Optiplex, I can see why. They have all these FREAKING RETARDED joints on the board. The mobo is actually made up of two boards joined at the edge.

That "joint" is so they can use the same board in all 3 style cases (ultra slim, slim, and mini tower) it is not retarded at all

The Mini tower gets the extender for extra PCI slots
