I found a pretty interesting article here regarding CompUSA's decision to stop carrying HP computers with AMD processors.

Looks like the P4 is outselling the 1.2ghz Athlon in their stores.

Also, of interesting note there's a rumor (possibly related to this decision) that AMD had to shut down a fab for over a month due to copper contamination. Looks like Intel isn't doing everything wrong.

frivolity if i've ever seen it..

AMD has copper contamination, therefore intel isn't doing something poorly...

i don't see the entailment...amd screwing up has nothign to do w/ intel doing something right...

intel can eat my ass

Is that sarcasm, fkloster?

BTW, for what it's worth, I've heard this rumor about the fab as well. I have no idea whether it is true or not... it seems kinda unlikely to me. A month long shut down sounds pretty huge.

The obvious reason for this is that the sort of person who'd buy a HP computer is exactly the sort of person who'd buy a p4 computer. Same of course goes for Compaq. Personally, I'm inclined to believe profit margins are higher on athlons because two computers at the same clock speed, one tbird one p3 are priced similarly, and if that's the case, I'm willing to bet gateway and its ilk won't stop carrying AMD any time soon. Dell is of course being paid off by intel :)

Why do people have to be dumb?

Umm, translation please?

If you go to www.gateway.com or www.compaq.com and you draw up two different systems, exactly the same except different cpu, one tbird and one p3, then they'll cost almost exactly the same amount of jack. Everybody knows the athlon cpu/mobo combo is cheaper than the p3 cpu/mobo, so why are they priced the same?

The answer is probably that Compaq and Gateway believe people buy on mhz, so they give the two computers the same price. Since Gateway/Compaq get the athlon for less money, they make more money with every athlon they sell.

Of course, this is all speculation and hypothesis, so don't quote me :)

It's called Kickbacks.

Intel probably told compusa that they would give them x amount of dollars for every P4 they sell. So knowing that the "knowledgable" sales people would push the AMD based machine because of price/performance, The CompUSA managment is going to makesure they will only sell intel stuff.

Hell if i where HP and somebody didn't want to carry a line of my computers I would royally screw compusa up by going the gateway route. Open HP stores in all the compusa markets and pull all HP products from CompUSA stores. HP can definatly afford to do it.

CompUSA has no loyalty to it's vendors, product manufactures or employees.

Man, you guys take this stuff to the EXTREME! But that's cool, I can relate.

A question as I'm new to the "who's the better processor" tangent:

Intel CPU's run cooler and more stable overall compared to the AMD crop?

And the P4 is still a little time off from reaching it's full potential as it's really being aimed at the next generation of "speed Demons" and power pc's, of which there aren't really any with the spec's Intel is looking to mate the P4 with??

Just wondering your thoughts....

Peace-

Who the hell shops at compusa? Probably the same people who buy compaq and HP pcs! DOH! The majority of the compusa shoppers probably never heard of AMD.

I wasn't saying that Intel was doing something right because they didn't have copper contamination. That statement was based on the fact that Intel has been able to keep a more expensive processor in HP's line of computers and AMD not being able to do so with a cheaper, higher performing product. That's where intel was doing something right. Think before you say things like this please.

The reason why people who shop for PCs at compUSA would take a 1.4ghz P4 over a 1.2ghz T-bird is because (most) compusa shoppers don't know that a 1.2ghz t-bird outperforms a 1.4ghz P4! The uneducated shopper automatically assumes that since the system with the P4 has 200mhz more than the T-bird it must be faster. You must realize that the general public is very, very, stupid (for the most part) when it comes to computers.

I'd say naive, not stupid. Even uninformed, would be a better term for it. The fact that someone does not know something, does not automatically make them stupid.

Actually, I would call them ignorant. You could preach all day about the benefits of an AMD over a P4 and they would still buy the P4 because that is the most common name they know. I call this Microsoft mentallity. People FLOCK to new MS products whether they are good or not just because they know the name. This is one of the reasons Betamax failed (other than Sonys stupid marketing).

Both those statements are untrue. If they were true, Intel would be violating several anti-trust laws.

Before you accuse a company of breaking federal laws, you might want to be sure your facts are accurate.

Uhmm, most MS products are good. That's why people buy them. Linux is suck, too hard and confusing to use, I'll take my Windows 2000 install thank you. Office is great, Word and Excel are better than Corel's junk. IE 5.5 absolutely destroys Netscrap Communicator 4.x and the new Geeko one stinks also. Windows Media 7 that everybody is complaining about? Don't forget, Real Player was the first real piece of bloated mediaware.

It isn't a valid comparison to compare Microsoft to Intel.

Let's just say that things go as some people predict... In a few months, software and hardware get optimized for the P4, and with the new apps the P4 significantly outperforms a 1.2ghz Athlon.

Would those same shoppers still be stupid? Or don't you guys believe the day will ever come that apps are optimized for the P4? Or is everyone that short sighted?

Or am I full of crap? ;)

;)

Nice to see you Robo. It's not quite as exciting around here with you being so scarce.

I know for one thing Intel is paying comp. manufacturers up to 60% of their advertizing budget
if they put the intel inside logo with the add.
