I heard the ad twice on 93.1 WPOC in the Baltimore Metro area. I didn't hear it mention a MIR, though.

Yah. I know some states have laws against that kinda thing. At first I thought it didn't have any MIRs, then in the "smallprint voice", I heard 'all deals after instant and mailin rebates'. They should at least be required to name whatever rebates apply to the deals they are advertising.

And then at the very end of the rebate printout from the register (so you can't read it ahead of time and readily opt out?) it says "This offer is no longer valid if not fully redeemed within 3 months from the close of the rebate period (this for the weekend sale that ended 2/17/03). Rebate checks will be mailed in 10 - 12 weeks." Er, isn't 12 weeks just about 3 months? And we all know many rebates arrive late. So, they could invoke the 3 month rule and bounce the rebate check by sending it late! I got it, but I don't like it!

I just tried Freeloaderz link to the product at CUSA and although it's OOS online you can click on the rebate and read the fine print before you buy - wish I had!

To me, that sounds like you have 3 months to send in the rebate (in this case, until 5/17) and then another 10-12 weeks that you'll have to wait to get it from that point.

Well, Eddie , the rebate must be postmarked by 3/3/03, so no 3 months there. And that sounds like the "close of the rebate period" to me. That's why I send that rebate in already to try to beat their "fully redeemed" limits - didn't even wait until this weekend to catch up on my correspondence (all the other Pres Day deal rebates).

I've also heard the radio ad in San Diego and the fast fine print at the end also made reference to all prices being after instant and mailin rebates. So I think everyone is in the same boat that gets this DVD.

SherE, good idea - I'll be interested in CUSA's response, please let us know.

And I trust you don't take this as thread carping, Squalish, just info for all (and a little misplaced Brag and Moan, I guess).

I bought this drive today in SoCal for $49.00 with $30MIR.

The rebate is valid from 02/15/03 thru 02/22/03, so if you want this drive you better buy it TODAY.

It must be postmarked by 03/07 and you MUST register it online. The rebate goes to Niagara Falls, NY.

Rebate checks will be mailed in 10-12 weeks :(

I picked one of those up then as well. My local store appeared to have never heard about the one-week unadvertised (web printout) special, and they gave me a run-around, trying to tell me that the savings was actually after a mail-in rebate, and wasn't until next week.

Glad to hear that this drive is up for sale again. When does the sale end? I would like to pick up another to run in RAID 1 if possible.

I was happy to find out that the drive does have FDB motors, and is relatively quiet at idle, but it runs warm during heavy HD activity, and the specs on the side of the box are wrong. Access time is around 13 ms, not 9.1ms. That's the seek time, and doesn't take into account rotational and firmware/command latency. It's about the same, performance-wise, as my older IBM 30GB 75GXP drive, except a little higher sustained xfer rate. The three-year warranty is definately a plus.

If you are a real performance nut, you would probably be better off with a WD "JB" drive, or an IBM 180GXP (if you're willing to trust IBM HD quality at this point, I'm not). But for a nice little 7200RPM file-storage drive, with a three-year warranty, these are nice.

Okay guys, I found out what the deal is.

Spoke with "Joe M."
866-782-5604

CSR for Mad Dog rebate center.

He said that as long as you submit the MIR by postmark date, then it will go through.

He said he did not understand himself what "fully redeemed by 3 months from the close of the rebate period" meant, nor does he know why they would put that.

So, to clarify:

Close of rebate period = 2/22/03
Fully redeemed does not mean you check has to be cashed by that date, it just means that they must have received your MIR by then (even though on top it says postmark of 2/22 -- very confusing, i know!)

So, today, I open up the DVD player! Go ahead and put "per Joe M." on the rebate, to be extra safe. Remember, must be postmarked by March 7th! Good luck.

:D
