I picked one of those up then as well. My local store appeared to have never heard about the one-week unadvertised (web printout) special, and they gave me a run-around, trying to tell me that the savings was actually after a mail-in rebate, and wasn't until next week.
Glad to hear that this drive is up for sale again. When does the sale end? I would like to pick up another to run in RAID 1 if possible.
I was happy to find out that the drive does have FDB motors, and is relatively quiet at idle, but it runs warm during heavy HD activity, and the specs on the side of the box are wrong. Access time is around 13 ms, not 9.1ms. That's the seek time, and doesn't take into account rotational and firmware/command latency. It's about the same, performance-wise, as my older IBM 30GB 75GXP drive, except a little higher sustained xfer rate. The three-year warranty is definately a plus.
If you are a real performance nut, you would probably be better off with a WD "JB" drive, or an IBM 180GXP (if you're willing to trust IBM HD quality at this point, I'm not). But for a nice little 7200RPM file-storage drive, with a three-year warranty, these are nice.
