Newegg actually has inserts in the Denver Post on Sundays. I wish they could buy the inCOMPetentUSA stores and go B&M.

Then their costs would skyrocket and you would call Newegg, Screwegg.

Don't feel bad, it is a 4 hour drive to get to a best buy or radio shack from where I live. ;)

I would not have it any other way.

I wouldn't be surprised if CompUSA went to an all online operation like Newegg, etc. but they'd really have to restructure their pricing and improve selection to be competitive. Or they could try a slightly different market, like that featuring CDW, OfficeMax/Depot, Staples, etc.

Good riddance. With their "huge" sales at the Mexifornia stores that closed, prices ended up being a few bucks shy of MSRP, more expensive than interweb prices. They did have rebadged BenQ DW1655 drives but that was all they were good for :D

CompUSA never had anything good in the stores, prices were always retail, return polices were horrible and customer service was a joke. They opened up in 1984 under the same Soft Warehouse in TX and have been struggling ever since. I remember when they had Windows 98 on sale for the first time, folks were camping out to get it.. hehe.. Well.. fast forward to present day and we find a nearly bankrupt company who can't compete with the Newegg's of today. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened to Best Buy & Circrit City.

Between Wal Mart & online vendors, BB & CC are under a lot of pressure.

I dunno what CC is doing lately, for instance, they kad a killer price on a 47" Olevia LCD I bought from them recently, they had 5 in stock (I did an online pick up in store sale) and not one unit was on display. They could have generated a lot of foot traffic & upselling with that model...

I never did understand how they can call themselves "Best Buy" when most of their products are being sold at MSRP and they offer the same kind of service you get at any other store...sounds like false advertising to me...;)

The sole CUSA in Alaska has been a ghost town for the past two years. Right about the same time our first (and only) BB opened across the street. Our BB just kicked CUSA's ass all over the place. Cleaner store. Friendlier (but still annoying) employees. Better selection. More sales. More organized. BB's parking lot is always full, while people use CUSA's lot to teach their teens how to drive.

But it's sad really... while I love the prices on Newegg and other online retailers, after I factor in shipping to Alaska (which companies LOVE to gouge on), I really spend less at B&M stores where there is no shipping, and no sales tax. We have no Fry's or anything else... if this CUSA goes, BB will be all that remains. I just hope the integrity of our particular store remains intact and doesn't go the way of the BB's elsewhere in the country. They already pissed me off by no longer carrying SACD's. Bastards!!!

SOLD!
CompUSA Sold, Will Close Stores; Expect Big Sales

Venerable electronics retailer CompUSA has been sold to an affiliate of restructuring firm Gordon Bros., and will close all of its retail stores.

CompUSA did not give a timetable for the store closings, saying only that all 103 existing stores would remain open and staffed throughout the holiday season. Some stores will apparently be sold to other retailers.

However, Gordon Bros. said that consumers would be offered "attractive bargains on computer and electronic products as part of store closing sales. As discount shoppers discovered when CompUSA closed roughly half of its stores in March, Gordon Bros. initially raised prices, than sold off inventory -- including shelving, lighting, and furniture -- at pennies on the dollar.

CompUSA contains pages promoting both advertised specials as well as unadvertised specials.

CompUSA.com and CompTechPro will continue to be run by the company during the sale process. CompUSA will be run by Bill Weinstein, a principal at Gordon Brothers Group acting as interim president, and by Stephen Gray, managing partner at restructuring firm CRG Partners, who will serve as chief restructuring officer.

"An orderly and expedited wind-down and asset sale process is the best option for CompUSA and its creditors at this juncture," said Weinstein in a statement. "We are focused on assuring that CompUSA's creditors, landlords and other key constituents are treated properly during this process. We are working hard to achieve the maximum recovery possible for the company's constituents while also minimizing unnecessary expenses. We will actively communicate with the various parties and their advisors starting today, and in the days and weeks ahead."

Not to go totally OT, but there are many reasons to hate BB. The reason that finally got to me was the fact they no longer carry Creative products (mp3 players).

CompUSA "Closing" sales are terrible. I prefer Circuit City over Best Buy and CompUSA anyday

I'd like to see their few remaining local stores converted to Fry's.

Heh.. I used to work for one of the stores that went through the first wave of closures back in March. Most of us had a feeling the rest of the stores would be gone within a year. It definitely sucks for what those employees are about to go through - those Gordon Brothers reps are total assholes. And yeah, like most of you know, the closing sales aren't any good till about a month into the sale... and by then, most of the good stuff has already been sold by the suckers who think 5% off is a great deal! I got quite a few awesome deals... but then again, I worked there ;)

I'm pretty sure most of you will still get your rebates though as they're usually handled by a 3rd party company.
