Hello...i am very very angry right now about the experience I just had at the Fair Lakes, VA CompUSA. This is in regard to Best Buy's TDK 24x10x40 for $59.97.

Two days ago I go into CompUSA with a print out of the pricetag from Best Buy for $59.97. I show it to the guy at CompUSA, he calls Best Buy...the idiots at Best Buy tell him it's $130. So I ask him to call another best buy, and they tell him it's $80. I talk to the manager, and he won't honor the price unless someone from best buy tells him it's $59.97. So I leave the store.

Today I find the receipt for the drive at best buy for $59.97 from the Louisville, Kentucky store. I print this out and take it to CompUSA. The manager says that he can't honor it because he only honors the price of local stores. If I show him that that's the price at a local Best Buy (either the Fair Lakes or Reston location) then he'll honor it.

So I go to a local best buy. A very high person at that store prints me the info about the pricing on the TDK drive. This shows all promotions, current, and previous prices on the drive. He wasn't supposed to print it for me but since I knew him he did it for me..and told me never to bring it into a best buy. I take this pricing print out, that shows the drive was $59.97 from 1/6 to 1/7, to CompUSA and say "Now I have proof that this was the price at a local Best Buy". So what do they do? THEY CALL THE BEST BUY....i just got them even better proof! Best Buy tells them the price is $130 before rebate. The manager says he won't honor the price match.

I go into the manager's office to talk to him. He tells me he can't match it because on the phone best buy is telling him it's $130. I say "that's true, because this was the price yesterday and the day before that. I came here 2 days ago and talked to you to get a price match for $59.97, and here I have proof showing that this was the price when i came in." He said he can only go by what the people from best buy tell him on the phone...well, they were obviously WRONG ..or, they could have told him that the price was $59.97..how am I supposed to know? I explained this to him and he got annoyed and told me to get out of his office. So I leave the store. I come back a minute later after I realized what a jerk this guy was to me.

I explain to him that I was there 2 days ago and should have gotten the price match then, and I would like to see a copy of the store's policy and price match policy. He says he doesn't have it, and he makes up the policy and that means I lose. and then he says "oh wait, you're already a loser anyway. now get out of my store" I explain to him that myself and my parents have spent at least $10000 at your store, why do you want to lose business over this? You're lying and going against your PM policy just because you don't like Best Buy's price. So he calls the police, and I leave.

I'm very annoyed about this. I have NEVER been treated this way by a manager, this guy is a complete jerk. I'd like everyone on AT, on behalf of hot deals and keeping them alive, to call the Regional Manager and complain about this manager.

BAD MANAGER'S NAME: Don Engel
HIS STORE: Fair Lakes, Fairfax, VA
REGIONAL MANAGER: 1-800-210-1402 (Carin Falconer) -- not there today, so call this guy:
REGIONAL OPERATIONS MANAGER: (410) 953-8025

Thank You..please just take a minute and call! This guy is a disgrace. Make PMing in the NOVA area a little easier by complaining on him

Hey, I don't live in that area but..... I think some type of protest like a picket line in front of the store with a tip to the media might be pretty funny. If you get some people to picket add in a sign that says, "Oprah call Dave" Just a thought. Sorry you had a bad 3 days.

Not sure what to say about this...

On one hand, you have been treated unjustly. On the other, I myself have been jipped out of should-be-hot deals by lying managers and have walked away without whining and trying to get the guy in trouble for trying to save money for his store (a/k/a his job).

That's what it sounds like to me, too. Wait a minute, which one are you talking about?

It sounds to me like your problem should be with the guys at BestBuy who kept telling him a price different than the one that you missed out on and were trying to get him to price match for you.

Just do what I would of done, waited for the police to show up and then file a complaint of fraud with the cop that showed up against the manager. Done that so many times, never been arrested and I always get what I want primarily because I refuse to do any business in the manager's office, do everything on the floor in front of other customers.

the guy just didn't want to lose money. i don't know what best buy told him on the phone...he didn't let me listen or anything.

i'm talking to the regional operations manager right now. no CompUSA will call me a loser, call the cops on me, and not hear about it.

start stealing their CD's;) j/k. Out of all stores, you had to pick compusa? They don't pricematch that easily... that's why no one here talks about pricematching at CompUSA stores. If it didn't work on the first two shots then forget it. Why waste your time running around between stores and taking $hit from trailer trash managers?

Oh, I forgot to mention, this is a HOT DEALS forum...

The main issue is that no manager at any store should ever insult a customer. Management should always take the 'high road.' That's why this guy is dead wrong.

Is your time worth nothing man? Considering that the Lite-On 24x is $60-70 at Staples, how much trouble did you put yourself through to try and save a couple of bucks? And what have you got to show for it in the end?

Ya know, he really shouldn't have said what he did to you but my advice is to just let it go. As far as the receipt from Louisville, you hopefully realized that it would be hit-or-miss getting a pricematch in Virginia based on that. And the printout from your friend at BestBuy? If he's such a close friend then maybe he could have set aside a TDK off the shelf for you on the 6th or 7th. I also think the manager was well within his rights to not pricematch based on a price that is no longer valid. If you can't do the pricematch when it's current then why even try? I doubt he called the police for real, though.

No, I'm not going to complain about the guy, nor should anyone else. I am too tired of the deal weaseling that goes around here increasingly, and the subsequent whining that happens when attempted deal weaseling doesn't work to the buyer's advantage.

My thoughts exactly. That is taking it to an extreme and IMHO time is a more valuable asset than $50 (if that). If you have that much time on your hands, maybe you should find a hobby. :)

As a manager myself I know that it can be really tough dealling with difficult customers and it is sometimes impossible to take the high road, especially when you're involved personally in the situation. The manager knew perfectly well that this guy would eventually get what he wanted, but I'm sure he drew a ton of satisfaction from the fact that this guy had to go through alot of hastle to get it.

the thing that bothers me is how juvenile the manager acted, its true that you did go thru a lot of trouble for about 10-20 bucks, but that guy still didn't have to be a jerk

It's worth a try.. I bet getting a pic of him would really piss him off too! ;)

What a bastard though. Give em hell.

Yeah, but if I were in this guy's shoes, I think reclaiming my power/dignity would be worth quite a bit of time to me.

Don't forget to get a microcassette recorder to get his sorry ass on tape should he try to tell you off, or his true feelings. Make sure to play it infront of him before you leave.

I did it once (nothing with pricematching, it was a cop) and boy did his face turn red. He is currently not a cop any more :)

I carry the recorder for lectures @ school. Was nice to have it that day I got pulled over and called names.

Good luck, let us know the status!
