I was never told there would be a 1 cent charge for checking out there. It looks like a normal checkout register. Its one of those, ohh the line is long, I will check you out over here type deal. They are set up for normal purchasing.

What race are you? They probably overcharged you due to that reason. I'd sue for $4 million if I were you.

Apparently he's a Jew if he's bitching about 1cent.

ANd this is coming from a guy named Jeffrey Lebowski?
Unless I'm missing your point, Lebowski sounds more East European than Jewish.

If his name was Lebowstein, then that would make more sense. :D

Honestly, in my retail experience the much more likely answer is that the lady at tech services added that $0.01 on because with it his transaction will be added to the count of those managed by that department, instead of going out as a regular sale. In other words, she's making her department look good by boosting her numbers.

At Best Buy there's often a "free setup" fee of $0.00 that we would add to bills for the same reason. Even if we charge nothing, the implication is the department spent time talking to the customer trying to make them purchase some services or a warranty. I think it's pretty shady to actually charge money (even if it is one cent) to do that.
