CompUSA 512MB PC2700 184pin DDR DIMM Memory Module $39.99 AR

Picked one up at the Santa Clara store. It is a PNY rebate. Last PNY rebate I sent in came in three weeks.

I've got a third slot open on my mobo, the first 2 slots each have a Samsung 256 card of PC2700 in them. Would it be ok to throw one of these in that third slot?

Depends. Your 256MB DIMMs are most likely single-sided, whereas this DIMM is double-sided. So it depends on the chipset/memory-controller and your mobo's layout whether or not it will work. If you posted more specifics then perhaps someone could take a stab at it, or you could purchase one and see if it works. AFAIK, CompUSA has dropped the restocking fee, at least for the holiday season.

For example, I have an MSI KT4V-L board, with three DIMMs slots and a KT400 chipset. I've heard of people having instability problems with filling all of the slots. I have all three slots filled, but all with single-sided PC2700 256MB DIMMs. Something like this would bump me from 768MB to 1GB, which would be nice, but I can't really say without trying it whether or not it would work. Theoretically, it should, but I worry about the memory bus loading being an issue with this particular board, given others' difficulties. It would still be worth if I sold my existing three DIMMs to a friend, and dropped in two 512MB double-sided DIMMs instead.

The DIMM I bought yesterday is single sided.

Single-sided? Curious. These don't have heatspreaders, right? Any chance (if you haven't installed it yet - I know, chances are slim) that you could copy down the code numbers on the chips and post them? More specifically, interested in finding out if these are x8 or x4 chips. Also, the total number of chips present, and how many on each side.

The DIMM is from Spec Tec from when I ran Sandra.

The chips total 8 on one side with the following markings:

BQ 0401
S80064VMJTW
-6A

There's a big S on the left of the chips, yes kinda like Superman, but it's black on white, before the markings.

These 8 chips have to be 64 MB each so wouldn't they be 64x64? For them to be x4 chips they would have to be 128x4. Do they even make those?
