My sis-in-law needs a cheapo laptop so this should work fine for her.

She gets the laptop and I'll keep the wireless router, all-in-one printer and norton products. Unfortunately there is 9 stinkin' rebates to fill out on those 3 products alone!!!

Don't be so pessimistic. Do you look at the freebie thread? I (and others) offer items there for free (or next to free) all the time.

I will be shipping from 01701 (Framingham MA) and live in Newton MA. If you have heat I can send first. My heat is JesseKnows.
 
what would be better in this thing... 768 ddr PC3200 or 1.25gb PC2700
I'm going to be using it as a PVR, light gaming, internet, bittorrent, p2p, occasional DV editing.
i had 1.25 PC2700 on my sempron 2400+ and liked not having a swap file.

Maybe dual DVI if it's under $200 or single DVI for under $80.

I'm not a gamer and it just has to run my Dell 2005FPW.
 
I need some loving here folks! i freaking brought the deal and then tried three different stores trying to find the desktop! not a single one in all three! the inventory says in-stock and i did call all the three stores around me! None! i wasted gas, traveled close to 100miles for nothing! i envy those that got in on it! :frown:
on a second note, i think compusa is doing this advertise and then bait off with no items on hand during sale time. I wish i could do something about it... THIS WAS HOW BAD IT WAS! there were two more poor gentlemen, about 60ish or 70ish men, and then some i think immigrant Russian that barely can speak English- who thought that they were going to get the deal. so the CSR took their info and told them that their item will be ready when the replacement for the deal comes back... My question was, these poor people are going to be screwed over, because when they send their rebates, a) they will have a rebate form with a UPC of different than what the rebate requires b) they will have a receipt date that will invalidate the rebates for the rebates are only honored for the two advertised sales days the replacement model is not supposed to show up until a week from now.... in case you did not get the whole story, they were replacing the model desktop with SR1710.... no prepay, but you pay when the computer arrives...

Are you sure you don't mean PCI-e? PCI-X is different slot, on my Dual Opteron server.

Here is a list off Newegg sorted by reviews, scroll down until you see something in your price range. Looks like 6600GTs have a lot of bag for the buck. I have been using Gigabyte fanless 6600s in all my regular PCs for about $100. All will have DVI, don't know about dual.

Newegg does even list a filter for dual DVIs, some for around $140.

Rossman, I assume you mean PCI-E right?:beer:

Since you aren't a gamer (you don't play any games right?), I would go with this for dual DVI.

You could always go with a 6600GT, X800GT, X800GTO, or X800XL if you wanted a little more gaming power. They all have models under $200.00

For single DVI, you could go with several, but just get one that doesn't use your system memory like a ATI X300SE or X550. None of those would be very good for any games however.
 
so any views on my memory Q? 768 PC3200 vs. 1.25 PC2700?
also, how is this onboard graphics gonna compare to a 128mb 9600 AGP (not se or xe)?

Unfortunately all my local CC's are OOS on the desktop 🙁

However one store had several laptops in stock, they are indeed $499 out the door with no rebates.

I'm recommending this deal to a couple of friends that need to replace older computers.

When I build a new computer, I usually start from scratch and just transfer data over. But for these friends, they are probably going to want to transfer over programs and info from their old computers.

Any recommendations as to the best application to do this if transferring from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home?

sale is only for two days ... Sunday and Monday 9-9... believe me, the way these things are there will be plenty for everybody to go around( unless of course, you are them damn (out-of-this-country buyers) that has businesses and so load up on these even though it clearly states 1 per household.

I dont know if anyone saw the fine print in the ad, but the stores are only REQUIRED to sell 3 at the sale price on the sale days. People bought them all up before the sale at all the stores in the Detroit area, so they gave 3 people rain checks for the given price..I dont know how that will work with the rebate though.

If anyone has any info on the compatibility of this desktop with the single/dual core opterons or the x2's. or if The bios would even allow a mild overclock, could you please post. Thanks

no overclocking in the bios, but clockgen works for a mild 200mhz overclock. which every chip and board should manage with no voltage increases.
 
i want to tell you all.... i think, i might steal this away, ofcourse being the OP too...

I was pissed that i didn't find any in three stores that i went to. mind you, i traveled just about 100 miles to visit these stores. somehow this morning i went and checked one store that is the farthest away from me again- i swear just a light bulb went on- i went and checked the display model- walah, it was there... so i argued to get them to sell it for me for $200 they said they did not have the UPC, keyboard,mouse.... after about 45 min of running around between three managers, they agreed to sell it for me for $259.99

so
409.99-50-100 = 259.99 - (110MIRcompusa which does not require UPC) => 150.00+tax... haha.!!!!! WOOHOOOOOOO!!! sorry i got a little carried away... i was really pissed off not getting on the deal!!!
 
I think this is a very good deal indeed, but like all comp USA stuff, you gotta be the first few to get it. No matter where you are. I live like 20 min away from a C-USA and every sale I hardly ever get anything useful, mostly OOS on the good stuff by the time I get there.

Went back to CompUSA today and they sold 20 $499 laptops within 2 hours. They were flying off the shelves.
 
Any word on the power supply rating for these Compaq Presario sr1600 series computers? 250W, 300W? My sister-in-law (the single working mom) got a Presario sr1601nx (same specs but it has the slower Sempron 3000+ processor) as a Christmas gift from her step dad. She said he set it up and installed extra ram (256 or 512 not sure yet), but her son is complaining about not being able to play any good games. Her son?s birthday is coming up and I was thinking that installing new $100 PCI-E card for them would be a nice gift. What is the most powerful card it can take with its current power supply? I hear that the Geforce 6200TC and Radeon X300 are not very good. As a last resort I can always replace my wife?s old Gigabyte FX5700 256mb VIVO card with a newer $100+ one and install that in her sister?s computer.
