Doesn?t Sanyo make the mechanism for Plextor so what the hell are you people bitching about you got a badass burner and you are still unsatisfied.

You'd be bitching too if your Sanyo didn't support DAO RAW or reading sub-channel data like a Plextor does. They're not the same drive.

When you people gonna realize that Sanyo does not make Plextor drives? Plextor makes their own stuff.

my ZipCD flashed to Plextor is amazing. did over 100 burns this weekend (don't ask :)) at 12x on the fly. Not 1 coaster...I was doing a ton of other things at the same time! Whoever makes this drive, it's simply amazing.

I rcv'd both of mine from a B&M store; the Job Order # is 44048 - both have the infamous two LEDs. I'm to the point that I don't care if they are Sayno or not. I got them because it was a heck of deal on burn-proof technology. As long as it can keep burning 700 Megs in approx. 6 minutes, it really doesn't matter who makes it. However, I might have a different opinion once it starts having problems or I loose support.

Mine was a Plextor also... only one light on front. Got it about 3 weeks ago and it works like magic if you ask me. Renamed the drive to Plextor and downloaded Plextor's firware directly from their website to flash the firmware. In any case, this is the sticker on the box:

5SB0400C56
JOB ORDER 43070
31120
ZIPCD INT 12X10X32 US
ASSEMBLED IN CHINA

Another confirmed info!
I have three, one with 40778 and two with job order 43270, all are 1 led plextor!
Went to local bestbuy and see lots of the "open boxed" iomega 12x10x32, all of the iomega drives in bestbuy are with round seal (yes, they are plextor). I was thinking could it be those guy who got Sanyo swap their sanyo with plextor?

hey guys i got the greatest news!! i drove 57 miles (round trip) to go and get the plextor drive. I flashed it with the bios and it works perfectly. This drive is so damn awsome, i am using it right now to burn a cd =P. i had teh guy at comp usa go through all the boxes and look through job codes until i found the right drive.

Job number is: 42438

So we finally figured it out 44XXX or higher is sanyo
43xxx or lower is plextor. I want to thank everyone for all their input and their help in makeing this possible =)

only thing left is to rename this drive but for some reason it keeps saying
"C:\unzipped\io2px12>io2px12
IOMEGA-->PLEXTOR v1.00

This program requires ASPI.
No drives found to change."

can anyone figure out what the prob could be?
im in w2k...that should explain it right there. hehehee

HOW TO GET A 16x TDK VELOCD FOR $20

I think this $279.99 price is a blessing, I was unaware of it. I received my drive (a Plextor by the way) which was bad. I took it to the Compusa B&M and attempted to exchange it for a new one. All they had were the Sanyos I was so disappointed. I finally gave up and decided to make an exchange for the Sanyo becasue I figured without a receipt (didn't want to tell them I bough it online) that all I was going to be able to do was exchange. The CSR started to do the return and the first half of the process was to return the ZipCD, I noticed that it rang up for $279.99 which gave me and idea, I said "can I exchange this for another drive that costs less"?, I explained how all they had were Sanyos and showed her how the drives are different. She said that was fine and but it had to come to exactly $279.99 so I had to find $30 worth of stuff to add, (can this get any better) they I decided to push for one more thing, I asked if I could get an item that costs more, again she said no problem but I have to add the difference. I quickly grabeed the TDK VeloCD 16X, added the $20 difference and out the door I went with a big smile on my face. Your results may vary, and by the way she never even asked for a receipt.

macssuck...
Does your 8/20 support writing of CD-TEXT. From what I remember from my old one, it doesn't. If it doesn't, then you don't have it all.

Interesting idea about the TDK VeloCD upgrade, but it seems to me you'll give up the original Iomega rebate in the process, so you'll end up paying $50 more for the TDK ($20 price difference + forfeited $30 rebate). The price of the VeloCD ends up being $150 + tax, assuming you can get CompUSA to make the exchange, right?.

Two questions guys:

1) Is the 12/31/00 rebate for the Iomega still good even thought it should have been mailed by 1/31/01? I though I heard something from CompUSA, but is there a special form we need to send in? If anyone has a copy of that email from CompUSA, please forward it to my profile email, it would be greatly appreciated.

2) Where do I go to get the right Flash file for my Iomega/Plextor?

Thanks!

In my defense I didn't really try and rip off compusa, I had every intention of exchanging it for a working Plextor, when they didn't have one I simply "rearranged" what drive they had on sale that week. Hey I asked the Customer service person if I could do it and they said yes. She never asked me for a receipt OR what I paid for the drive originally.

My old car Cd Player could read it, someone has since stolen it however. It's a very convenient feature if you don't want to carry around dozens of jewel cases with track listings, or if you've burned the CD well... again helps out with the track titles.
