For anyone who got their drives from back orders may have noticed something wrong. The new Iomega's arent rebagged plextors, they are Sanyo CDR-BP1300P. =/ I pretty muched figured it out when the rename and flash didnt work and all aspi layers were installed properly. The rename couldnt find the drive and neither could the flash update. Can anyone else confirm this?

<UPDATE>
Ok i took it back to comp usa and exchanged it. I went home and opened it up and saw that it is another damn sanyo, BUT i noticed the same exact sticker on the back of the box near the bottom and it that said

"5RAM0205J4
JOB ORDER 44048
31120
ZIPCD INT 12X10X32 US
ASSEMBLED IN CHINA"

I know all the drives plex and sanyo are assembled in china so that doesnt have anything to do with it. If everyone could just post what their sitcker says and if its a plextor or a sanyo. Maybe we could figure it out with out opening up the box.

UPDATE # 2

hey guys i got the greatest news!! i drove 57 miles (round trip) to go and get the plextor drive. I flashed it with the bios and it works perfectly. This drive is so damn awsome, i am using it right now to burn a cd =P. i had teh guy at comp usa go through all the boxes and look through job codes until i found the right drive.

Job number is: 42438

So we finally figured it out 44XXX or higher is sanyo
43xxx or lower is plextor. I want to thank everyone for all their input and their help in makeing this possible =)

only thing left is to rename this drive but for some reason it keeps saying
"C:\unzipped\io2px12>io2px12
IOMEGA-->PLEXTOR v1.00

This program requires ASPI.
No drives found to change."

can anyone figure out what the prob could be?
im in w2k...that should explain it right there. hehehee

Yeah they are rebadged Sanyo drives instead of the plextors. My friend got a call the other day and went to pic up his 2 that had come in and they were the sanyo and could not be flashed with the plextor firmware...big bummer.

I ordered my Iomega drive online and it was backordered as well. I did get a rebadged Plextor when it finally came in though, but it was defective so I brought it back to the B&M store for a replacement. The B&M store's replacement was actually dated 2 months older than the one I got shipped to me online, still a rebadged Plextor. So, at your option, if you really want a rebadged Plextor instead of the Sanyo drive, you could try you luck at taking your current drive back to a local B&M store and claiming it's defective, or you just want a replacement, and hopefully the B&M stores will give you the one you want. Just an idea.

Well, my brother just got his drive and it is a rebadged plextor. I guess it depends which one you got. Just a bit of hope for some of you out there. Though I've heard that a lot more sanyos are popping up.

If you REALLY read the WHOLE thread, mrVW had already posted in that thread on Feb 2 (I think) that there is a rebadged Sanyo. Don't just freaken posted in it, READ the darn thing too. Then may be you would realize this thread does NOT deserve to exsit.

Is there a huge problem with the rebadged Sanyo? I have the 12x4x32 rebadged Sanyo and it works great. It has burnproof and will do cloneCD. For $99, you got a hell of a bargain either way.

ok people, get it straight. sanyo makes all of the drives. iomegas, plextors, and TDKs (12x10x32) are ALL rebadged sanyos. they just have different chips that make them detected with different names. same hardware, different firmware. don't freak out.

Got a quick qestion...what are the benefits of flashing the cdrw with plextor firmware? Considering it is only a rebadged plextor, wouldn't it have the same features as it already?
I have a TDK Velocd that is supposedly a rebadged plextor as well. TDK came with it's own 1.7 firmware. So i'm just curious as what are the benefits of renaming it.

thanx

So the old IOMEGA's were Plextors and the new ones are Sanyos? How odd... I flashed mine with Plextor firmware and it runs fine. Does that make it a Plextor?

Anyone having this odd problem with their 12x10x32's where the green light (burnproof?) kicks in every two seconds at 12x? I can't figure out why. EZCD and CDRWIN all show full buffer...

alfalfa79 - Once your srive is the Io upgrade using the info at roundsparrow.com, THEN rename it. Worked for me.

yodayoda - Wrong. Plextor actually manufactures their own drives, SCSI and IDE.

YES - many of the internals are the exact same parts but Sanyo doesn't manufacture all of the drives. However, Sanyo DID create the BurnProof feature that Plextor uses. Plextor liscensed that tech from Sanyo.

Therefore, Sanyo also doesn't actually make all of the TDK's OR the Io, that's just bad information.

I was able to rename mine to Plextor, but when trying to upgrade the firmware from 1.6 to 1.7, nothing happens. It's doing something in the background for hours but never upgrades it. Any clues here? I mean if it was really a Sanyo, I doubt I would be able to rename it.

Forget what I said, for some miraculous reason it finally let me upgrade my firmware. I guess I was one of the lucky ones that got the Plextor.

alfalfa, just flash your drive to v1.04, THEN flash to 1.07 and it should work, and yoda, the structure of the drive might very well be the same, but you sure can't use PLEXTOOLS with a Sanyo drive.....just my 2 cents.
