A+ is worth it if you're applying for desktop service tech jobs, simply because they want A+ certified people. Technically, it's not worth much. They say A+ is for a DST with 6 mo on the job experience. I went to school in the midwest and started around $9/hr, don't expect more than that for just an A+.

$9/hr for A+? That's kinda bad =(. Sure you want those jobs, but seriously, a serious internship where you learn stuff is a lot better than a job that teenagers can do...

don't take the test, not yet

im 18, tomorrow I'm taking the 3rd semester exam of the CCNA class at my highschool, finished Cisco's Semester 1 of A+, have had a lot of experience with computers and even went to nationals at BPA for PC Servicing and Troubleshooting (multiple choice test; 1st at Regionals, 5th at States [Ohio], and 13th at Nationals. Nod bad for a junior 😉 ) and I STILL don't feel ready for the test. Why? Because with the test costing a total of $240, it's a little scary with the thought of failure.
but i might take it soon, just because my teacher might want me to to preare for the SkillsUSA regionals test. and im waiting till the end of the month to see how I did for the regionals this year for the BPA.

and damn kid, im jealous of your job. currently im unemployed 🙁 got laid off from my last job (was making $8/hr loading trucks, did that for 2 weeks when i sliced open my hand and got laid off, before that i was a busser, with after tips being lucky to score $7/hr, usually around $6/hr on an average week.
take the test by all means, but only when you feel extremely confident. i mean... take the practice A+ exams (on cd's in A+ books)
definitly take the practice.. you'll see what are you getting yourself in for.

sample question thats somewhat easy:
what IRQ is COM3 on? what about LPT1?

thats not bad at all starting out. and if he was working part-time hours (or even fulltime), and not just fixing a computer or two, then thats good. if you are on the job, specifically only there to fix a computer or two, then that's when i'd expect $20/hr+. Especially for starting out.

yes, i agree with nocturnal here. usually, folks who take it say it's worth it -- the others, who haven't taken the courses or exams, will say it's not.

the A+ is not a "very simple" exam. there are a lot of interesting things you learn and skills you pick up along the way. if you take the A+ exam without having studied, you probably won't see high marks in your favor.

lol, you sure about that? I took my A+ after a hard night of partying, got in a 9, finished at 9:40 with a twenty minute break in the middle. Got a 800 something on the hardware and a 600 someting on the software, both well above what you need to pass, (590 and 510).

To the OP. Take it. It won't hurt, but in the PC field its kinda like a drivers Licence. And don't expect to make 25+ an hour, $15 is a good wage. Hell, I make $10 an hour and I'm A+ and Net+ Certified.

I only have my A+ and I'm making $21 an hour.

sh1t, where do you work. I'm making a whole 11/hr right now. 🙁 need to go get my security+ and network+ out of the way.

This past summer I worked at a company and I got paid $10 / hr. Yes $9 / hr is utter crap. I'm not certified for crap, and I was doing some coding. Yes everyone including the manager agreed I was underpaid but they said they couldn't do a thing about it. My friends were working doing similar things as I was at other companies. One was paid $17/hr and the other was paid $25 / hr. I had 2 friends getting paid $25 an hr as interns. Yes I do believe $9 / hr is a rip, and if you're not getting close to $20 / hr, then I would just go to In-n-Out and get my $10 / hr.

i've taken the practice exams a couple times, and that kind of stuff is like, not on there. its all junk thats pointless to know. this IRQ, that I/O address, and even parts of ancient dot-matrix printers (okay sure, they are still used for massive drafting prints, blah blah)...
i would reference more samples, but um.. im drawing a HUGE blank on the crap that was on the test. i gotta take the practice a few more times.

Yes, but he's 16. Focus on school, get into a better school, get a better career going. Too many kids these days are trying to get around that and get into jobs early. You don't build a better life that way, and sure you can make money in the short run, but it doesn't help you too much in the long run. Hell what did I do when I was 16? I had 6 honors/AP courses under my belt, and SATs, and all that. You think I had time to work a job? No, but damn right my studying paid off. Now in college, sure I can learn to manage my time maybe a little better and get a part time job. It's nothing big, but I just want some more spending money (parties and what not), but I'll tell you my primary focus is my education still. Why? I see graduate school as the next step.

You're going to spend money and time on these classes and prep all for what? So you can get $15 / hr? It comes at a price though...

like yourself, I took the A+ certs when I was 16. I'm 23 now and it's just a resume' filler. Maybe it's because I've never held a true IT position, but it looked nice when I applied at Best Buy at 16. Other than that, I hate to say it's worthless.

Kalifornia is a little different than Michigan. Fast food pays about $6/hr out here not 10. If I was in Kalifornia, I'd need to be making $25/hr just to support myself.

i've talked to all the mom and pop shops around here, and they all say that the A+ is a resume filler... and that they don't hire based on it, but, like one store in particular, based on how well you do in a little test they give u if you meet their initial requirements.
i haven't even gotten to the test stage yet.. if only they'd let me.. as a salesman at least, i'd actually rather work the sales floor than the tech, im not too interested in tech positions anymore, or even much to do with computers.. but given my knowledge of computer parts and accessories, i can talk over the head of a salesman in any mom/pop store... best buy and like places is a given too...

Meh. It's a simple test, might as well. Not much you can really study for - as long as you know what you're doing.
Will it help? I highly doubt it. Is it a good starting point? Of course.

I'm one of those who took both of the exams and call it worthless. I don't bother listing it on my resume anymore. It was, by far, the easiest test I have ever taken. I signed up for the both tests 3 days prior to taking them, did no prep work, took no courses, and missed one question on both exams.

OP, I think you'd do better if you took Microsoft's 70-270, the Windows XP exam .... that way the recruiter won't laugh at you. Also, getting certified on Office products can't hurt either.

I am going to go through this comp book and take it in probably a couple week. I already know a good bit about computers but I don't pay too much attention to IRQ's and LPT so on and so on but I am glad that it's easy I won't have a problem passing it 😀
