I've seen a lot of these on basketball players recently. Is it just a fad or is there some actual science behind it?

Just google compression sleeve for multiple examples of these. I've seen them for both legs and arms.

I just bought compression shorts for running, it keeps your legs warm and may help prevent injuries if you are prone to pulling/tearing

The basketball sleeve maybe at one point was of a sports medicine foundation but im sure it is also just uses as an accesory to enhance appearance.

More power to them, the more comfort you have hopefully the more points you score!!

For non-injured athletes, they don't really do much. The research behind them is typically pretty wishy-washy. If you use it for inflamed joints though, they help out a great deal. This week I aggravated my triceps tendon(s) with bench somehow so I created a makeshift compression sleeve with an old soccer sock. It really helped keep the throbbing down and improved my pain level.
