Compressed Work Week - Have you done it?

What do you think of four 10hr days as opposed to five 8hrs? My department just opened that option up and im thinking of enrolling.

Whats your experience with it? good? bad?

I did it when I worked construction at an oil refinery the summer after I graduated high school. As an 18-year old kid, I thought it was fantastic because it gave me a three-day weekend. I'd still probably enjoy it.

I'm salaried - we work a 9/80 schedule - 9 hour days, every other Friday off (and 8 hours on the Fridays we do work).

It is one of the primary reasons I am still working here.

I'd so take it if that's available. But I'm on salary. The official schedule is 8-5, but people come in at 9 and leave at 4, then take 2 hr. lunches neffing on ATOT. Oh wait...

That's how it was for me when I worked at the World Bank. I would work 3 16 hour days if I could get Monday and Friday off :=)

LOL hell i'd work 48 hours straight if i could get the other 5 days off!

I worked a couple of jobs in the past that offered the option of compressed work week and I loved it. There is very little difference in working 10 hour days vs. 8 hour days and the three day weekends every week are great.

If you are single or have an S/O on a similar schedule and do not have younger kids, I think it's great.

Trying to get things done on a 5x8 work week sucks. Post offices, doctors appointments, grocery shopping at non-rush times, ect are all a pain in the ass.

Having a full day extra a week off (or even two on a 3x12 schedule) is wonderful. Plus if you have a longer commute you just dropped your gas consumption by 20% a week.

Downsides are risk of burnout...but really that can be said for even an 8 hour job and a cut into your downtime to do things like work out, relax, spend times with S/O or kids.

I used to do 3x12's and that was very nice having 4 day "weekends". Another attractive option that some employers offer is a 7 on, 7 off. You work 7 10 hour days in a row and then have 7 off. Depending on your lifestyle that could be great too.

I have tomorrow off with this schedule. Also, coming in to work on the Monday of a 4 day week just makes everything better.

Not sure if I'd do the 16 hour days, but I'd definitely do 10 hour days to get every Friday off. Leaving an extra hour later really helps with the traffic situation, too - as you're not quite at the peak time.

I'm on the 10/40 schedule right now and its awesome. Every Friday off which I use to do some contracting work for my previous employer. Extra money never hurts.

4 tens rocks, if they truly leave you the 5th day. So many times I get 8 hours of OT on the 5th day anyway.

I've worked 4-10's many times. I love it. Like Skyking, I usually ended up having to work Friday for overtime, but not always...3 day weekends rock.

Many years ago, the company I worked for had us on 4-10's and I turned around and worked 3-13's for a different company for about 6 months. Decent money, but I never had time to spend any of it...but that's what wifes are for, right? 😉

At the place I used to work, it was 9hrs 4 days a week, and leave at noon on Friday. Worked out pretty well if you ask me.

I am currently working 4/10's M-Thur

Its great in the summer 3 day weekends... do things around the house

the downside is every fri there isnt a single person I know who doesnt work fri's

The days do get long sometimes. When I leave after 8 hours of working sometimes I wish my days were that short. After working 10 then doing 8 is a breeze..

In the winter up in Mass Id rather work 8 hrs a day instead..

I want to go to the gym before work but I work at 7 and my commute is 1 hour and I cant get to the gym at 5 and then work 10 hours...

4/10 is great.

I had Friday's off. I loved kickin around while everybody else was at work, doing their thing. The atmosphere is very different from Sat & Sunday.

I'd love to have a 4-10 schedule, but my employer would never go for it. They would oppose it solely because we would like it.

I suppose the trick would be to get them to think it was their idea and make them think we hated it.

Our hourly workers work four 10's (though, so far this year it has been five 10's) and they love it. I'm salaried, so I have no personal comment.
