Complicated (for me) network problem - getting wireless internet and having a separate gigabit LAN

Hi -

I've been looking for a solution to this problem for several days now. Basically I just bought a second desktop computer (render node) and would like to connect them together on Gigabit ethernet.

There is no network or telephone port anywhere near my setup, so I currently am running on wireless internet. I have a gigabit switch, but since I can't have it near the router I'm kind of stuck. I tried getting a spare wired router and connecting my switch to that so that I was technically on two networks at once, but then the internet stopped working until i disabled the wired connection.

So of course my question is, is there any way to receive wireless internet (and share it with the other computer) while having a local non-internet gigabit ethernet network without cutting into the wall and running an ethernet jack?

My knowledge of networking is elementary, so thanks in advance for some help.

Btw- I'm running Vista Ultimate on one computer and XP x64 on the other.

Look into wireless bridges.

The idea would be to have the wireless bridge connect to your wireless network, and then share that internet connection through the gigabit switch.

Wireless network -> wireless bridge -> gigiabit switch -> computers.

E.g. Buffalo "Wireless Ethernet Converter".

E.g. Linksys WRT54GL or Buffalo WHR-G54S or Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 or similar devices that are compatible with third-party firmware such as DD-WRT, which provides a client bridge mode.

There's probably a cheaper solution involving Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), but I personally prefer wireless bridges and their ability to be driver-free, ICS free, etc..

I'm a little confused by your post but you do realize that gigabit will not work over wireless? Maybe 18Mbps if you are lucky.

Well, I think the OP was clear on this, as he mentioned "separate gigabit LAN". AFAIK, the gigabit LAN requirement is local only among the two computers; he'd like to use wireless internet in addition, and the bridge in addition to the gigabit switch (or ICS) should be able to do that.

Is this what you're trying to do?

I am trying out this network diagram program and I think it works well. I'll probably buy it.

I'm glad you could decipher that! 🙂
