After I worked at my current job for about 6 months, my main manager gave me a short talk about how I "act like I know everything". Prior to that, I had never been told that by anyone--I don't feel like I act that way at all, I wasn't one of those kids in school who tried to always act like a know-it-all, but I listened to what she had to say to make her happy.

So, fast forward to today, we are in a meeting discussing new features that will be implemented on a switch we are going to put on the market soon. All of a sudden, ACL's (Access Control Lists) come up, and she goes on for about 5 minutes about how currently the switch has very little privacy and doesn't really control what its users can or cannot access. She kept giving examples, saying stuff like, "you see, if I log into the box, it doesn't control what files I access if I use the super-user login and password, so I could really just have access to all of the files". I'm looking around thinking, "what the fvck is she talking about", but apparently nobody on my team has any clue what an ACL actually is. Finally, someone over the phone interrupts her and summarizes what an ACL actually is, and she pretty much just blows him off like he has no clue what he was talking about.

This sort of thing happens all of the time... I guess sometimes you just have to keep your mouth shut.

my boss does that crap all the time too. i just learned to not say anything because it doesn't get me anywhere. he'll just put me down or ignore me anyway.
 
ummm, someone should fire her.

It sounds like she doesn't know anything about what she is talking about, let alone her job.
 
I hate hearing stories like this. I have a friend who's in a similar situation. How do these inept people become managers and bosses? I don't get it. My manager hasn't the slightest idea how I do what I do (I'm a DB programmer), but he's happy because my customers are happy with my work. He stays far off my case and it works great. But, it seems that situations like mine are hard to find. Good luck!

They become Managers because they learn not about how to do the job, but how to smile liek a donut and let the hire ups stick their wieners in their mouths.

That's how it is at my company. You don't have to know squat about what you are in charge of, it's all based on how well you socialize with the higher ups.
 
My previous boss was like that also. The problem is that many people who would have a clue as to what is going on don't want the responsibility to manage. Not that they couldn't manage, they just didn't want to.
 
Yeah, its frustrating some times...
I have 3 managers, and two of them honestly have NO idea what is going on. Literally, almost zero knowledge when it comes to computer networking company. All they know how to do is arrange meetings through outlook. My 3rd boss is a CCIE... weird how that works.

For the first year of my current job I had 6 managers, only one was good (she was the first) but she left to be with her kids. My current manager of a year is very annoying. I do QA on a Legacy system so she never bothered to learn anything about it. I think I talk to her about 2 or 3 times a month. It sucks because she has no idea what I do which is going to really kick me in the arse when it comes time for a raise (which I completely deserve).

My boss may not know how to do my job as well as me, But I don't know how to do his job as well as him. I'm thankful that my management above is all fully capable of their duties and of also maintaining a good attitude and sense of humor.

/me is happy with where I work and who I work for 🙂 Now if only I could get more $$$ and I would be set .. hehehehe

adminsand managers dont have to be technical minded or know what you do/ how you do it... they need to know how to schedule, control and manage. that is their calling. yours is the technical side.

the owner of the company i work for used to that all the time, until he had to explain to a customer something the customer already knew... now he just refers people to me when they ask about the tech side. he is a great electrician and a decent programmer, but he doesnt keep abreast of the industry changes... thats my job.

anyone know why everytime i reply to a thread my firefox crashes? ive done the cookie delete thang too... only on this site it happens...


edit: 3rd party programs that we have to accommodate, not just any ole program...
