Hi,

I suppose using KillDisk software to wipe HDD. KillDisk erases the whole drive, it is impossible to recover any info after. It is free and after using it you should re-partition and re-format it to use from scratch. It supports some highly secure erase algorithms such as Guttman's. Head to KillDisk for more info and download.

Has anyone physically taken apart a hard drive and exposed the platters and then destroyed them?

I took a dead one apart before, but didn't do much to the platters (although my handling probably damaged them at least a little)...I took out the magnet that it used and played with it. That damn thing was unbelievably strong...for awhile anyways, and then it kind of wore out and lost its super-magnetism.
