(Does anyone know why when I login, the forum's 'forum categories' disappear??!
I login, and the page is blank! No topics, no nav menu, nothing! The only way to see
ANY of the forums is to log out!)

Guys, I'm checking out an Abit KG7-RAID mobo. By default it doesn't support XP CPU's, so it was flashed to the LATEST BIOS, kg7ct. The BIOS right before that one is what added XP support, but since new BIOS' are inclusive of the past versions, I used the latest. It now boots fine with the XP 1700+, but during POST states: "CPU Type...UNKNOWN". Is this normal, or is something wrong with this BIOS version? I used a Duron to flash it, and that CPU DID state: "CPU Type....DURON" during POST.
Thanks....

"Support AMD Athlon XP CPU, 0.18 micron process Palomino up to 2100+ and 0.13 micron process Thoroughbred up to 2000+" This is from the abit bios KG7 webpage.

I flashed to the kg7ct bios also and installed a XP1700 thoroughbred.
I also get unknown processor, but it seems to work fine. Running at 13 x 133.

Thanks guys.

(also does anyone know why I'm no longer notified when I'm SUBSCRIBED to threads and someone replies? For several months now, no emails.)

antmanbee, we may have a 'counterfeit' XP. I've been talking to the Abit people about this, and he seems to think it's a relabeled XP. He flashed one of these boards with the CT BIOS and he said this did not happen to him, POST showed "Athlon XP".

'counterfeit' XP?

How could this be? It runs at 13 x 133 for me. I never even tried it at the default xp1700 multiplier. I just popped it in and went right to 13x.
It does say unknown cpu type, but maybe if you let it auto detect, it would identify it properly, but in user define it will not. I will look into it more on Sunday when I have some time.
The chip looks like a thoroughbred B to me from what I have read. I got it from Newegg. What cpu could it be if it was relabeled?
Maybe because it is unlocked the motherboard does not recognize it.

On these KG7-RAID mobo's here (v1.0), it did auto detect. It went right to 11x133 @POST and on both mobo's said 'unknown CPU type'. The Abit guy didn't actually use that word "counterfeit", I just used that term. His words were "relabeled XP" (which I assumed as meaning 'counterfeit' so to speak). From what other CPU, I don't know, he didn't comment on that. I'm not familiar with AMD CPU's, so all I can guess at is maybe a relabeled Athlon NON XP....like a Tbird 1.46ghz (IF there is such a thing). :)

I think the motherboard supports the cpu voltage-wise, but doesn't display the correct speed on bootup.
I think these motherboard were made before amd's xp naming, and abit hasn't added the mhz to xp conversion in their bios.
When i overclock my xp1600(runs at 1400mhz) to 1650 mhz i get 1650 mhz instead of an xp number conversion.
the xp 1700 runs at 1.46 ghz, so your computer is fine. Amd names thier cpu now, the xp rating is how fast it is compared to a intel cpu.
XP1700 is not the speed of the cpu, just the name of the cpu.

Yeah I new their speed was 1.46ghz, and that is displayed correctly @bootup on these; just says before it "unknown CPU" instead of "XP". Yes, these boards were made before XP's. Their entry BIOS (for mobo rev. 1.0) won't support XP's and they require a BIOS update to at least kg78s. The latest BIOS is kg7ct and that's what I used. Maybe I should have used the 78s version. However the guy at Abit said he tried the CT version and did NOT get 'unknown CPU', so I'm thinking it's a mobo revision thing. 1.2 is out now, and that may be what he tried and what is required to get rid of that 'unknown CPU'. Anyway, the customer is happy with it, so, so am I. :)

My MSI K7T Turbo 2 does the same. At least your board speaks proper English. LOL. My board says "Unknow" without the "n". From my research, as long as the board recognizes the actual speed, your performance will not be affected. I have XP1700+ Throughbred B from Newegg. I think the .13micron design is the cause for me.

Hee hee. I notice that in the so called "English" section of the manuals as well! They also "Seem to have problem with prepositions and adverbs"! :D

Say guys....which AMD Socket A CPU is green?? I just saw a picture of one and it was green. The image didn't say which one it was. The Duron AND XP I have are brown, and the Athlon NON XP was sort of an off-black. Is the XP's supposed to be green?

I have KG7raid. I have 1800+ thoroughbred-A. It is correctly identified as an Athlon XP in user defined. As far as i know the KG7 does not support thoroughbred-B. That could be the problem, though I thought the B stepping was only available on the 2400+ and above as it is more expensive to manufacture. I have not upgraded to the latest bios as my machine is beautifully stable and fast. I have the 9M_2.34 by sudhian.com faq's. A great resource for abit errata.

I think what I have is a "B". You can check out the thread here

On the KG7-RAID's I tried the CPU on, both were Rev. 1.0 and had the latest "CT" BIOS revision. It showed "unknown CPU" whether it was default or 'user defined'.

(I'm about to delete the shortcut for this thread, and since for some reason I'm never notified of thread replies I'm sub'd to, I won't see anymore replies unless sent personally to me) :)
