Compgeeks ( www.compgeeks.com ) has a couple of Celeron systems for sale at $ 248, 252 . The prices seemed to have increased substantially over the Hp Celeron system deals there offered a few weeks ago. Is a Celeron 800 mhz 4X4X24 CD-RW, 20meg hd, 128 mb ram system without OS worth this ? Id this one HP ? - the ad says "HP clone ?

Slight typo. The 800 MHz system with a 4x4x24 CD-RW is $284 (not $248 :D).

A buddy of mine just ordered that one yesterday as a Christmas present. It should arrive in a few days. I'll post an update of his experience with it.

...but it sounds like a good deal to me (which is why I recommended it :)).

I had a friend buy one of these. It was just problem after problem. He had to buy a new hard drive in about 4 weeks, about 2 weeks after that he had to reinstall windows, again,,, he finally got rid of the thing. Maybe it was just his, but I wouldn't touch these HPs.

Just build your own AMD computer. get a 1ghz Duron and a KT266a(or KM133a if you need video and sound on board) board for around $150, and get a cheap case from compgeeks, and get a hard drive from a mail in rebate deal.

Well you get the point. If you build it, you know whats inside and can make it a lot faster and better.

A friend bought a 766 one about a month ago. It looked brand new. He seems to be happy with it. Good deal if you dont want to assemble a computer yourself.

Personally, I wouldn't touch an HP consumer machine with a 10 foot pole.

From looking at what CompGeeks is selling, it looks like they took some HP parts
and slapped them into a cheap case. That's even worse...

I bought one of those Celery 633 emachines for a friend from Compgeeks. The modem was DOA and the hard drive died in 3 weeks but I got replacement parts for both of them. Although it took me a month and many e-mails it was worth it because they sent a brand new 40 GB drive instead of the 15 GB that was on the system. It's a nice system otherwise considering we paid $177 after coupon ;)
