compatibility mode problem - Please Help

Hello, I've done some research to correct this prob with no avail here's the problem:

I accidentilly installed some compatibility mode drivers when trying to get an old DOS game to work. The problem: I can no longer use my CD Drive in Windows 95 (won't even show in Explorer). There are conflicts with the primary and secondary IDE controllers and the following appears in the System -> performance tab:

Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive X: using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.

I've tried removing the IDE controller as well as some registry deletions of 'NOIDE' keys as suggested by the MS site. when re-booting I got the Blue screen saying a conflict with ide controllers (some compatibility and some not) thus it will change them to the way they were the last successful boot. On the next boot, the changes I made were un done.

any suggestions?? Thank you for your time,

compatibility mode usually occurs when, like you said, real mode drivers are installed. make sure that the "config.sys" file and "autoexec.bat" in the C:\ folder are not attempting to load any DOS cd-rom drivers (i.e. mscdex.exe in autoexec.bat, device = c:\oakcdrom.sys in config.sys... something similar to those)... you could also just rename your config.sys and autoexec.bat to different file extensions, like config.old, etc.

if that doesn't work (or isn't the problem), you might want to boot into safe mode, remove your ide controllers from device manager, then reboot normally and allow windows to reinstall them

I had this problem with my cousins pc with w98 1st edition. I finally upgraded him to win98se and it solved the entire problem. I know this may not be a great solution, but it is really easy as long as you have 32mb and an extra 200mb of disk space.

-all line in the config and autoexec are 'REM'ed out
-removing ide controllers in safe mode didn't help
-would an over-install in same windows dir help? and do you have to re-install 32bit apps after an over-install?

Further development: the IDE controllers displayed are Dual PIC IDE controller... But the systems IDE drives are all connected to the onboard controller, there is no PCI controller... trying to install the Bus master controller does't help... windows insists on installing the PCI controllers
