Comparison Pics - Dualshock 3 vs Dualshock 4

I got my Dualshock 4 early from Amazon and figured i'd post a few pics of them side by side.

Initial impressions... the DS4 feels exceptionally well built and is noticeable more comfortable to hold than all previous PS controllers.

UPDATE: I played Black Ops 2 with the controller (plugged in via USB cable) and I am loving it! The analogue sticks and triggers are so much better than the DS3 and the grip is a lot more comfortable.

I grew up with the PSone controller.. well I was very much a adult kid when i got my first PSone. I prefer it to all other controllers. To me the two thumbsticks across from each other is more natural, but I'm sure only because that is what i have done for .. 15 years? Moving them like the Xbox did always felt off to me.. Good to see the new one uses that same layout (thumbsticks). And seems to improve some of the other stuff, more rounded handles, and from what i hear the shoulder buttons are improved (the ps3 changes where plenty good for me, the earlier ones (two small buttons) sucked).

any word on if 3rd party will be able to do wireless on it yet without USB dongles and crap?

I actually hate the joystick setup. I kind of have it in my head that a thumb will slip and hit the other, haha.

I really can't imagine how that would happen. And the feel it the sticks is very secure. I think your thumbs are unlikely to slip off in any way.

Cheers!

For all the negatives, I have to hand it to both Sony and Microsoft, I think they both improved their controllers.

Of course, because seemingly that can't make things just plain better, there's still issues (like WTF, the One controller isn't PC compatible until next year?, supposedly the PS4 will work on PC but more or less get treated as a 360 controller), and the prices I think are kinda high, but its nice to see they didn't assume that just because they sold tens of millions of systems that their stuff is perfect. I'm really glad Sony changed theirs as their controller gave me hand cramps from the shape.

Some site, I forget which one, did a 4 part story on what changed on the Sony controller. It all sounded good to me. I love their stick layout (I hate the Xbox asymmetrical layout and think this is better than the two sticks at the top that Nintendo went with), love that they fixed the "triggers" (although the ones on the One sound best of all so far), changed the d-pad and face buttons (the DS2/3 buttons felt mushy to me and supposedly they're more "clicky" and dumped the analog aspect since no games really cared about that feedback as games that did like racing games the people wanted dedicated controllers instead while most others didn't care).

My only real disappointment on the DS4 is that the part that looks rubberized isn't, although I assume its one of those soft touch somewhat grippy plastic that's on some tablets?

I do kinda wish that they'd both have just put a mic on the controller so that you wouldn't have to worry about a headset mic at all if you didn't want to (I know Kinect on the One but I'd prefer something closer).

I'm really looking forward to playing with the DS4. So much improvement from the DS3, from the stick separation and the trigger shape improvements, it should be a huge improvement.

your thumb shouldn't slide off since it's no longer convex, however your thumbs can still touch easily, as the guy who unboxed the first one on youtube shows in his video. it's further apart than the ds3, but still not too far that your thumbs can't touch.

im guessing sony wanted to keep the "playstation brand" controller which is why they continue to put the left analog in the wrong spot.

"Wrong Spot" is certainly up for debate... Although, I will admit that it seems that more people prefer the XBox layout to the Sony layout. I actually prefer the symmetrical layout myself... but to each his/her own on that.

What I wonder is why they didn't just make them sort of modular so that you could swap them around to your own liking... that would have been slick!

I purchased the PS2 and 3 over the xbox because of the controller. It just feels far better in my hands. I admit my hands are rather small too.

Has a 3rd party ever made a PS controller with offset joysticks? It seems like quite an opportunity.

I haven't owned a PS since the PS1 and the joysticks being neighbors is going to trip me up.

Edit: I retract my question. Google says there's a bunch of them. Good news!

I do wonder how 3rd parties are going to be able to create the controllers now since the DS4 has the Move light and the touchpad. I know it can certainly be done by the 3rd parties, but it starts to get a little more pricey to make them I would think.

There was also one that allowed you to swap the positions at will.

That's what I want!.... though I generally don't like 3rd party controllers... they tend to be of poor quality in my experience.

I will have to keep an eye out on the 3rd party market for the PS4... but, I am very pleased with the DS4 as it is.

I think a lot of the companies that make 3rd party stuff are changing. Madcatz makes very good products now, Pelican has upped their quality (they even changed their name to PDP because of how bad their image was), and I know Razer makes some good peripherals for consoles.

The days of super crap 3rd party controllers is a thing of the past I believe. At least, for Xbox, because they have to now get signed by MS. Everyone can't just go around making controllers.

Be sure to read reviews! The joysticks on the 3rd party controllers can be pretty crap!

There's also playstation<->xbox controller adapters in case you want to use an xbox controller on a PS.

well, it looks like much less of a toy. All they need to do is fix the D-pad and left stick position and it might be passable

What's wrong with the dpad?

I do know that they changed it to be digital instead of analogue if that's what you're referring to.

I am probably picking one up tomorrow so I can work through the games I have that let me use it, since I can't stand the loose sticks on the ds3. I keep seeing that a USB cable is used, so does that mean the charge cable for the ps3 won't work? I have a 10 foot cable and will need to get something about that long if the cable doesn't work for it.

No, the DS4 uses a Micro USB rather than the Mini USB that the PS3/DS3 uses.

Damn that sucks. Maybe I can by an extension that I can plug one of my old cell chargers into so I can play it from my recliner and not have to worry about my kids or dog kicking it. Thanks Krioni.

The curiosity got to me, so I ended up grabbing a DS4 last night so I could mess around with it. If the DS4 was horrible, I figured I could sell it, and I would know that I shouldn't get a PS4 until a can find another controller option.

Some immediate initial thoughts were that the build quality seems improved vs. the DS3. It's plastic has a nice feeling texture to it, that helps improve the feel. Ergonomically it feels a lot better in my hands. The handles at the bottom of the controller are much better shaped now, and fit into my palms nicely. The improved trigger shape a feels good in a resting position too.

Now, if I take a 360 controller and just try to hold it comfortably, I can take note that my thumbs are in a forward position, generally. The left thumb wants to rest just touching the bottom of the left analog, and the right thumb wants to rest just above that right analog, barely touching maybe. One the DS4, the ergonomics are actually a little better, where the natural thumb resting position is in a forward position that lays across the the top middle of the analog sticks.
- The DS4 ergonomically, the best controller I've ever held.

I fired up Tomb Raider on the PS3 for testing, and had nothing but love for the actual control on the analog sticks. They had great grip, responsiveness, and the resistance felt a little lighter than a 360 controller, but not in a bad way.

I'm looking forward to testing the DS4 more this weekend.
