That's true, but the AGP version is currently running a $35-$50 price premuim over the PCIe cards, which means about $320. You can get a 6800GT AGP for around $300, so there really isn't any point in going X800XL for AGP.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In any case, most of the time the 6800 and the 6600GT are within +/- 3% of each other. Link IMHO, the 6800 is the worst bang for the buck vid card out there.

Doesn't the 6800 cost around $200?
and the 6800 can be flashed to a 16 pipe card?

Prices may vary on the 6800nu. I got mine for around $210 after shipping.

Whether or not the pipes and shader will unlock is uncertain. Varies from card to card.

50% chance all pipes and shaders will ulnock(12 -> 16pipe 5 -> vertex shader)
75% chance vertex shader only will unlock
60% channce only pipes il unlock (must ulock in quads of pipes so if 1 of the 4 are messed up, it's going to not be able to secussfully unlock)

You forgot X800 XL in between the X800 Pro and the X700XT.

BTW the x800 XL and 6800GT are very close in performance (except Doom 3) but the 6800GT is about $100-50 more.

Hmmmm, what ATI card is the 6800 Ultra comparable to? x850 Pro?

the 6800 can be had for about $205 now .. (newegg $229 - $30MIR + shipping) ...
it's a pretty good amount faster then the 6600GT
I'm not 100% sure if this is accurate, but I'm pretty sure the best price on a 6600GT AGP is around $160.
Bang per buck, the 6800 and 6600GT offer similar value.

EDIT: This is assuming that you want to run at a semi high resolution, and that you are using AA. if you don't care about AA, then the 6600GT is a better value.

The part I just bolded is wrong. The XL is faster than the X800 Pro. The XL should be right behind the X800 XT.

Anyways a 6800U is pretty comparable to an X800XT sometimes it beats it sometimes it doesn't.

If your getting an AGP card look for a cheap 6800GT or I have also seen X800XT All in Wonders for like 350 which is an EXCELLENT price on them.

Thanks for the correction, JBT. I forget, with ATI generally does it go XT>Pro>"normal"? And is the XL designation is new for the X800 series?

although i think best bet prob is the gt, ultra is a waste of money considering gt can go ultra, but i am also happy with my 6800nu got all pipes up and running plus it was low cost.

I disagree. Bank for the buck in video cards can be measured in frames per dollar. With that in mind, both the 6600GT and the X800 XL are a better value than the 6800GT. Look at this link for example. The 6600GT performs within 80% to 98% of the 6800GT depending which resolution you look at. That means that the 6600GT gives you around 80% of the performance at about half the price of a 6800GT. I think the numbers are clear. 6600GT>6800GT on value. The X800 XL would fall between the 6600GT and the 6800GT on value.

X800xl is a good deal.. But who plays at those low resolutions 😉

😀

6800GT / X800XL is your best bet right now.

what about the aiw card x800 xt for 330!! i think thats a hell of a chioce for agp
gt for pci express if going sli

OK, xyyz, we've tossed out enough different options; everything from X850 PE to a X300 (thankfully no one has suggested a 6200, yet). Help us a little and feed us some info and we'll argue the finer points based on some narrower parameters.

It's quiz time but there are no wrong answers 😀

1. What?s your budget?

2. What system will your video new card be matched with?

3. Which games do you play regularly?

4. What's your minimum resolution you are willing to play using high setting?

That where we should have started if this is whole thread is really about helping you choose a new vid card. 😉

No, X850 is mroe designed to compete with dual 6800gt's or dual 6800 ultra's. The X800XT or the X850XT is the competitor to the 6800ultra[/quote]

You just contradicted yourself. 😕

here we go... this is great.

alright...

1. the cheaper the better... 😉 around $250-300, i might be able to squeeze out $350, but it's unlikely.

2. it's be an SFF based on the Shuttle SN25P. something around a gig of ram, and a 3200 or 3400 CPU.

3. probably be doom clones. 🙂 doom3, hl2, etc.

4. min will be 1024x768, but i'd really like to play 1600x1200 or higher w/ full features enabled.

Me, in your shoes (that's gross!), I choose X800 XL without a second thought. It's a great fit!

Now this is the part where everyone tells me I'm wrong. 😉

1. In the $250-300 range the X800 XL is currently your only option, and it's not a bad one. It's easily the best bang for buck card this year (so far).

2. For use in SFF, the x800 XL also gets the nod because it does not require the PCI-e power connection (hence it runs cooler and uses less power).

3. Unfortunately, for D3 clones nVidia is going to give you the best gaming experience.

4. To play 1600x1200 with all ops on is going to require a much higher end card, such as the x850XT or the 6800 Ultra. The XL will play some games at 1600x1200 with some ops on, but many it will not (D3, Far Cry), and in the future, games are only going to get more demanding.

Oh, I read what you wrote wrong. Somehow I saw X850XTPE instead of X850XT.

And I'd agree, X800XL seems best for the OP.

6600gt has 128 bit memory which means NO AA/AF without huge performance drops.

The Pci-e version comes with 256 mb of memory which can become usefull at high resoloutions.

The extra pipes help too.

Even though its downclocked 100 mhz on the mem for the pci-e version, its easy to gain that 100 mhz back.

Look at some benchmarks, the 9800xt 256 is ~15% faster than the 6600gt at 1600x++ w/aa/af.

If you dont care about aa/af I can understand your statement but for me, I cant play without it.

AGP version of the Nu is only $200 on newegg, way better deal than 170 or whatever agp 6600gts go for.

I say, if your going AGP

$200 6800NU
$300 6800GT

For Pci-e

170-220 6600GT
$279 X800XL

IMO the XL is going to be a lot faster for obvious reasons than the 6600,

Whats the best bang for the buck if you have an Athlon XP 1700+?

Would i be wasting my money if i opted for anything better than a 6600gt?
