Howdy,

My sister-in-law has an old Gateway computer that (according to the paperwork) has an AMD Athlon 1000 Mhz processor in it. This was purchased in December of 2000.

I'm trying to compare that to what sort of Penitum chip would be equivalent to it. Anyone know? Or is there even a release date history for Pentium chips to know what was considered a good Pentium chip 5.5 years ago?

I'm thinking it might be comparable to a P3 but don't know for sure. mainly asking because we have an extra P3 866 computer getting scrapped and I was going to swap it with theirs since their PC is slow and is running Windows ME and such.

Any thoughts?

Well it's actually a Dual P3 866... With far more memory and hard drive space. THey are alreayd considereding a new computer but all they use it for is email which doesn't require a new computer. Just need to have their currrent one wiped or a newer one with more resources and XP and such.

Here's an old AT article from when the Athlon 1ghz was first released. Seems like the RDRAM equipped PIIIs of the time were giving it some pretty stiff competition, although it still managed to outperform them 99% of the time. The Tbred core also came in a 1ghz flavor and with it's much faster L2 cache it would perform somewhat higher than the benchies in this article show.
