Compared to a 9mm, how does a .380 acp compare?

I fired a sig 239 9mm at the rental range the other day. It's the first handgun I've ever shot. I am considering a sig 232 .380 acp, but I haven't fired a 380 before. What's the difference in terms of stopping power? Both guns are *very* small

Well, in terms of stopping power neither is preferable though 9mm Para does pack more punch. If you want a good balance of stopping power of .45 and a high velocity of 9mm consider .40S&W Technically speaking .380 is a 9mm round. It's oficial designation in Germany is 9mm Kurtz (short)

I want a concealed carry so .45 is a tad too big. I'll take small form factor over stopping power.

how do you plan on doing that?

380 is 9mm short.

Personally - my neurosurgeon reccomends nothing smaller than 9mm and a projectile moving at least 1000 FPS.

Shot placement is far more important than choice of caliber.

Glock makes compact 45's that are convenient to carry. They also take standard hi-cap mazines from oother Glock pistols. For a slim profile 45 carry gun look for Para Ordnance

Then don't carry a gun.

As I'm sure many CCWers will echo momentarily - or will beat me to it - if you carry a gun, you should be prepared to shoot to kill.

I agree. If you want to disable, carry some good pepper spray.

Let's see.. It's a windy or rainy day.. What do you do?

I will agree with M4H. If you're packing you better have the balls to pull the trigger.

You can get a pepper spray canister that fires in a stream.

All Sig pistols are great. My father has a P226 9mm. It is probably my second favorite pistol to shoot behind the Glock 17 9x19.

What, like getting hit with pepper spray is no big deal?

Compared to being shot it's not. ;)

And I wouldn't expect some crack-fueled junkie to slow down more than half a step with anything less than a hot lead injection, or possibly a direct hit with a taser.

Nothing wrong with a .380 is the shooters good.
Hell, even a .22LR beats the hell out of a stick. Personally I'd do a 9mm but like I said, aint a damned thing wrong with the .380, it'll kill a man dead as surely as any other gun if you hit the vitals.

If I see someone breaking into my car, it should be legal for me to shoot them. It should make no difference whether I am in imminent bodily threat, pieces of sh!t deserve to be removed from the gene pull and handgun rounds should be doing the trick.

Which is it?
