for those that are too young to remember, Isaiah Thomas said, Bird only gets press because he was white (heavily paraphrased).

i, for one, do not think of "tact" when i think of Rush. but its stupid that he quit for a simple ignorant comment.
 
I agree with you PG same thing... . And M&M has been said to get an inordinate amount of press because he's white and a rapper.

Either way none of these instances are racist.

I dont think Rush resigned by choice. He was probably asked to by ESPN so they wouldn't have to fire him because of the bad press that Sharpton and the Democrats would give them.
 
On the one Hand, Racism DOES exist, on all sides.

On the other hand, LEGISLATION will not get rid of it. treating black people as if they are particularly vulnerable to racism only makes them weaker.

duh, but common sense is not put into effect when dealing with racial issues only the shout really load and don't think approach works

I know ~50% of the people don't like Ronald Reagan but he makes a great point: "Welfare's purpose should be to eliminate, as far as possible, the need for its own existence." Black leaders have been saying that affirmitive action is needed but instead trying to fix the black neighboor hoods so aa will not be needed, they would rather just have a quick fix (aa). Black "leaders" like that are not the solution...they are the problem.

one only has to listen to Charles Barkley during his TNT halftime/postgame commentaries. none of his "What white people don't understand...." comments are ever brought to attention as being racist. He's praised as a guy who "speaks his mind". If Larry Bird were to start of a sentence with "What black people don't understand.....", his ass would get canned ASAP and he'd have a "racist" label on him forever.

when i see my son on the streets playing with his friends, white, indian, korean (my son) and then a black kid comes along and starts making comments about ch1nk this ch1nk that, making funny noises as if he is speaking chinese etc, then yes, he learned that behavior from SOMEBODY and it is the root of discrimination.

Let me break it down for you, back when Isiah said those remarks it was ok because our culture wasn't so "PC" focused as today. Also, when a superstar critisizes his peers it's met with the ideaology that "oh it's ok b/c overpaid superstars are going to run their mouths, but as long as they still wow us on the field/court then we're not going to worry about it". For instance, look at Shaq with his racial slur toward Yao... yeah the Asian community was pissed for awhile, but they got over it after Shaq apologized and wowed them with his great matchups against Yao.

Also, I think there's something to be said about intelligence level. Many people view athletes as dumb, impetuous, uneducated people who don't think before they speak. Rush, on the other hand, is paid to be an analyst who uses his brain and hence falls under the stereotype that he is more intelligent and should know better. Think about it, if Brad Johnson said those things about McNabb the media blitz would have been maybe half as bad as Rush. Then Brad would have just said, whoops, I'm sorry, the Bucs would get to the playoffs again, and everyone would fahgeddabout it.

OMFG, no, i disagree, PC was JUST as bad if not worse then than it is now. SHOOT, PC was TERMED in the mid '80's. ALMOST EVERYONE liberal conservative what have you was into the PC crap then. i think a lot of people back then thought that PC would solve the racism problem.

I have to agree to disagree with you... every decade that has passed has been more PC then the next, for example, the 10 commandments being taken down in the South. People in the South would have given 2 shts about that in the 80's, now all of a sudden it's a huge deal. And what about prayer in the classroom in the 80's, when it was allowed! You ask whether I have any idea of what it was like in the 80's regarding PC, but fail to provide an example that reinforces your opinion... care to back up your argument?
