Just got back from Bestbuy to check out the X1000.

Impression: a very solidly built machine. It looks sleek. The top casing is aluminum. The bottom is very sturdy plastic.

I am very impressed by the LCD casing. I try to press on it hard and the LCD did not distort. Good KB, good layout.

However, after seeing the X1000. I am even more convinced to keep my T40. In terms or "portability" rating, the T40 is much more portable. Even without the battery in the X1000, it was noticebily heavier than the T40. The thickness between the T40 (1in) and the X1000 (1.3in) was very noticeble. I just don't think the T40 and the X1000 are in the same "weight class". The diffrence is similar to using an 12.1inch thin notebook w/o optical drive(i.e. X22) vs a T23
That's not to say the X1000 was bad. In fact, compared to other HP, compaq, laptops at BB, the X1000 was much more portable. Also, if you are considering a Dell 600m vs X1000, definately get the X1000. THe feel of the weight between the two arevery close.

Having said all that, I may be biased or overcritical of weight and size in laptops. My preious laptops are: Sony Z505, R505, Dell 600M, IBM x22.

Also, one more factor to consider if you are deciding between the T40 and X1000. IBM's warranty for T40 is 3 years. It's $200 extra for the Compaq to have 3 years warranty.

t40 zealots. the deciding factor between some like this compaq x1000 and a t40 is about $1,000 well at least for me. i tend to turn the performance options as far down as possible.

i really need something that is going to stand up to daily use though, i'm not sure if i believe the compaq is up to the challenge. ibm being more buisness orientated seems more up to such a challenge. ultimatley i think ill end up buying a t30 as soon as i make myself feel better about the reports of motherboards and hard drives failing.

i'd definatley consider the compaq if i was planning to use the laptop more casually.

i'm off to bang my head against the wall some more and see if a decision pops out. :)

I guess the slower rpm will mean less wear and tear, right?

Thanks.

Question about the rebate form: The only X models listed are the X1001, X1002, X1005, X1010, X1015, and X1020. Is the X1000 included in these?

Thanks.

This rebate at the end says it includes BTO models, which would be the X1000, whereas the X1001 would be a retail model. HP Shopping makes it pretty clear that is covered when you go through checkout.

I just got back from Best Buy too, I wasn't expecting the X1000 but I saw it in the flier and I got the manager to bring one out from the warehouse :) I agree with you on its build and dimension. But I guess since my current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 8000, somehow the X1000 feels like a "thin & light" to me ;) I just wish they had a higher resolution screen, the only one there was the 1280x800. Oh and, does anyone here know the response time of the X1000's panel? My I8000's panel is 50ms :( and I really want to upgrade this time around.

Here is basically what I got:

Presario X1000 Intel + $100 MIR + Free Ship - BTO1446632
- Intel Pentium-M 1.4GHz
- XP Home Operating System.
- MS Works/Money/Encarta.,
- 15.4 inch WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
- 128MB DDR SDRAM
- 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
- 40GB 4200RPM HDD
- DVD-CDRW Drive
- Built in 56K modem+10/100 LAN
- High capacity 8 cell LiION
- USB floppy drive $50 rebate

$1498.99
Less: 10% coupon = $1349.09
Less: $100 MIR Presario = $1249.09
Less: $50 MIR floppy= $1199.09 (might as well, it cost you $49.99, you get $50 rebate)
Add: Memory 512MB $80 = $1279.09

Bigger HDD, better video, bigger display, more processor, less memory (but you are gonna upgrade anyway with aftermarket stuff), no wireless (get it aftermarket, it will cost less and work better).

That seems like a better deal to me, eh? You can save some more $$$ by backing the vid card down, shrinking the display, and backing down the processor.... if you want to. If you put vid, graphics, and screen back to (or as close to) what you selected above, you would save another $157 ($175 minus the 10% coupon).... so $1122.09 final price... and free shipping!!

As far as Compaq support knows, customers SHOULD be able to upgrade from the 9200 to the 9600 once the 9600 comes available. The video card (per their schematics) is NOT integrated. If they offer the 9600 for the x1000, current owners should be able to upgrade.

Yup, I got my 19U along with promotional items. You only need 1 share of stock to be elgible. Call up IBM. They are running a promotion now on double memory. But it's 256x2. I got an IBM 256 module off of ebay for $20. So that's not much of a promotion.

I could be wrong, but i think the aberrant model # notions are for various system configrations. (ie. different cpu speed, v- card)

would doing art in widescreen make it look different on a standart monitor. this laptop would be a perfect reason to get rid of my gateway 600xl that i hate. if someone would know that would be great@!!!

Shouldn't affect it at all. You may want to save the art in a format friendlier to the web standard resolution (1024X768) if you plan on publishing on the web. If you save it in wide screen their image viewer will either shrink the image to fit on their screen or they can scroll the image left and right if they want a closer look.

lets say i make something 800x600 for example. would it look different on the compaq x1000 compared to my gateway 600xl. meaning would the aspect ratio distort the image.

No, it's not stretched, its just has more horizontal real-estate.

Jimmy, the new 4200rpm drives are almost as fast as 5400 ones. I know the 4200 80gn is about the same as the 40gnx. In some cases the 80gn is faster. Just make sure you buy the newest models that have a higher density. I think the best deal in new laptop drives is Fujitsu's MHT 4200 60GB for ~$160.

THe funny thing is my T40 came with a Fujitsu 4200 30GB drive. SUper quiet and fast. You would think IBM would use IBM/HItachi drives.

Its sounds good that you can upgrade the video card.
How about DVD+RW?
Would it be possible as well for a fixed optical drive in x1000?

Thanks

Couple of questions:

Is it worth the extra $50 to upgrade from 32MB to 64MB for the Radeon 9200? I'm not a hardcore gamer, but like to play a few games now and then.

Is it worth the extra $50 to go from 1.3Ghz to 1.4 Ghz or $150 to go from 1.3Ghz to 1.5 Ghz?

Is it better to get the lowest amount of RAM and then buy more from a place like crucial?

Main purpose is to make presentations using Powerpoint and handle tons of large digital pictures. I will be using it at the hospital dental clinic to access patient information and show pt's pictures. It will also be used for the basics (word processing, web browsing, downloading) and some gaming, maybe some dvds while traveling. My desktop at home is getting a bit outdated, so I don't want to go too cheap on my new laptop, it's not a desktop replacement, but don't want something too slow either. My desktop is only a PIII-550, which is starting to slow down sometimes. well hope you guys can help me out in deciding which options to choose.

One last thing, my wife had a compaq presario for a few years and she really hated it, and from my experiences i would have to agree, the keyboard died on her after about 2.5 years. So I'm a bit worried on going with compaq, should i upgrade the warranty?

from 32 to 64mb, it depends on what game ur playing. If you occasionally play graphics intensive game like UT2003 or BF1942, it is better to go with 64mb than 32MB.

yes, compaq rip u off on rams, stating that their own ram has the best compatibility. MAXIMUM FEAR, MAXIMUM PROFIT. Crucial should be fine or if you want better performance, check out OCz rams

guess ur patients will be very WOwed by ur new lappy hehe..still waiting to buy it in Canada :(

yeah, get the 3 year warranty for safety sake. Maybe the newer breed have stronger keyboard but the warranty is still a safer protection for ur investment
