Son just bought a compaq puter that has a Asus A7v8x motherboard in it, i have that same board (retail board) but mine has more pci slots and more bios options.
Guess its a stripped down model? anyway, anyone think either "Asus bios updater" or floopy flash with a Asus bios from my board would work on his Asus "compaq" board? they do have at least the same Award type bios, not sure yet about any version as i have yet to see the thing for myself. What he is after is more overclocking (cpu/memory) options in bios.

Wow, I find it really surprising that Compaq is putting quality mobos in their computers.

I would call Compaq's tech support and lie and say that you think you need to flash the BIOS. Then ask if you can flash with the A7V8X's standard BIOS.

That is a idea, but i dont know about the V8X quality, i have a new one that i am not using now due having to underclock a 1800 amd by a couple of notches to get the board to run stable, had all sorts of windows and install problems with it. Bios was updated and didnt help either. Cpu ran fine in the gigabyte i am now using. May be a freak thing but who knows.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. if we ever get to try i will post models and if it worked.
That Compaq is a new purchace from staples. Seems like same board, but with 2 less pci slots. yeah, whole board is shorter. model number has a "LA" at end of number.
