I ordered mine for $1370 after $100 rebate

I got extras:
cdr/dvd, wifi, 60gig(didn't want 80, because60 is faster), highest resolution(I like alot of program on screen)

and 128mb of RAM. Question though:

Where to get RAM for this baby - like 2 512mb? and what type? the manuals are not working right online

Two questions:

1. Someone said if you buy it with a certain credit card they double your warranty, what CC is that? And does it work with the damage protection warranty?

2. If I upgrade the RAM, do I void the warranty?

Thats such a sick deal, all the performance and features line up real great, thanks for pointing this out Dan! Even if you stole it! Anyways, would the 32mb 9200 work good. I mean would 3DMarks drop a ton, because I dont think they would. Also, I was too wondering about the screen, sounds like I might have to upgrade to the WXGA+. And, what is the stock 1.3ghz processor compare to? A 2ghz P4? My athlon on my computer is stock at 1.47ghz and equals 1700+.

Whats the lowdown on Bluetooth, will that ever hit the market?

less memory probably won't affect your benchscores unless the 32mb R9200 has a different core. I'm guessing the P-m 1.3 is comparable to around a P4m 1.8-2.0ghz? Just a guess, b/c the 1.6ghz P-m is comparable to the 2.4ghz P4m. Someone in this thread or the fw thread showed a site that compared the performance of these P-m's.

Bluetooth is already on the market.

You get the best at crucial.com . The site walks you through, I tried it recently, so you just have to select the right laptop (Compaq x1000) and you are taken to the ram you need to buy.
There might be a couple other sites which sell the same RAM cheaper, so to know what you need, go to crucial.com , and then hunt around if you will, but I like crucial, since its dependable.

This might be of interest to all who are considering the x1000, it helped me a lot :)

There is an access port for the mini pci card on the bottom of the X1000. I haven't received the X1000 yet, but when I do I'll swap out the WiFi card. There isn't anythin particularly wrong with the Intel card that comes with the Centrino models.
I have 802.11b at home, but my work disables 802.11b on their 11g APs. So, I was hoping to put in a b/g mini-PCI card once they start hitting the market. I really don't want to have to deal with the PCMCIA card unless it is unavoidable.

from what i've noticed is that there are 2 10%off coupon codes. one is supposed to expire 7/17 and the other supposedly on 8/1, although i have seen some places say that both coupons expire on 7/17 too.

LOL). For those who are adept computer users, who would you recommend -- Dell, HP or Toshiba -- for someone who needs good service after the sale?

I used to work a Best Buy. Concerning bang for the buck, I always thought Compaq had the best value. Dell is a close second, but they don't have the nifty scroll feature that the HP/Compaqs have. I would buy a laptop for that feature alone - very handy. Compaq's seemed to offer the best features for the lowest price at the time. After that, I would probably consider a Toshiba. They are a little ugly, but they seem to be rugged. You can beat the hell out of them and they seem to keep ticking (perhaps other's experience has varied, but that's what I've observed).

If you're looking for service, you might consider getting a service plan from CompUSA, Best Buy (ick), or some place similar. Then they can take care of it when it breaks. Sam's Club has service plans too, but I have a feeling it's not as convenient (what the hell can they do in-store??).

If you're looking for the best service and aren't afraid of spending money for it, you'll probably like Best Buy's service. Yeah, yeah, everyone has their horror stories, but for $249 they cover simply everything (including batteries, which can cost around $200/each, depending on the brand). Best Buy sucks, but they pretty much cover everything and they have the no-lemon policy.

My $.02

I think I'm going to buy this laptop for my sister since she is going to colleg in the fall.

Two questions, though:

1. Would the Radeon 7500 be enough for non-fps games like Warcraft/Starcraft, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc? Even if I wanted to play FPS games, would it be unbearable if I used the Radeon 7500?

2. This laptop would mainly for email, word processing (sister don't do much on computer). Should I just spend the extra 50 bux for the WSXGA+ anyway? Is it worth 50 extra bux?

Thanks

ok guys....help me out here....

I recently bought the Dell Inspiron 8500...specs shown below: (i can still return it using Dell return policy)
Intel Pentium 4 2.0 - Mobile
512 MB DDR memory
15.0" WUXGA+
DVD/CD-RW drive
30 GB Hard Druve
64MB GeForce 4 4200 mobile video card

Here are my specs for this compaq laptop:
Intel Pentium M 1.40 Ghz (Centrino)
128 MB DDR (+ 256MB From Crucial) = 384 MB DDR total
15.0 WSXGA+
DVD/CD-RW
40 GB Hard Drive
64 MB Radeon 9200 mobile video card

My question is that given that both laptops cost me the same....which one should i go with ?
I really like the WUXGA+ screen (i am used to small text) but also liked the SXGA+ screen on my previous laptop.

The hard drive on the compaq is better but the video card on the Dell is better.
Screen and memory is better on the Dell but processor is better on the compaq.

so guys...help me out here

Thanks

i would go with compaq because of battery life. i had a inspiron with the same config minus the gf4200 (i had the radeon 9000). i found it bulky, short battery life, and runs fairly hot. yes, it is a lot better than the inspiron 8200, but the compaq is simply perfect. the dell latitude d800 are pretty good i heard, but it's a bit too expensive for me.

The most important question:

Will this laptop with a Radeon Mobility 9200 64mb play games like SOF2, BF1942, MOHAA, Raven Shield, GTAVC, and Midnight Club 2?

Or will they be soo bad that you can't play them? Any advice?

TIA

i'm vaguely aware of centrino which seems to be the big thing in the notebook world these days.

from what i've gathered, they're supposed to be much more powerful with twice the battery life and comes with a wifi card or something. is that about right ?

how's the wifi that comes with it, would it be a better investment to install one of your own ?

and exactly how powerful are these chips? when i got my laptop a year ago it was a 1.4ghz and now it seems the lappies are around 2ghz. the centrinos seem to be slower though, this particular one's 1.3ghz. how do they compare? i mean, first thought is that it's a downgrade from 1.4 to 1.3ghz, but i'm sure i'm wrong.

would this be a suitable desktop replacement? ie, suitable for gaming? mostly just war3 now that the expansion's out :)

i'd appreciate any help to clue me back in, and of course i'm looking through articles and searches for additional info

You should take a look at http://www.pctorque.com and their Sager laptops. Someone mentioned them within the last month and I've completely stopped looking at Dell, HP/Compaq, etc. laptops since I've learned about ODM (original design manufacturer) computers. They even sell them without an OS. :)

axelfox: The 7500 will be enough, but the 32 MB 9200 is only $25 more.

I am sure the lowest res will suit her fine. I myself like everything to be SMALL though, but like my brother, for instance, needs to have everything as big as possible. I guess it just depends.

Anyone with order delays hear anything? I just called and they said mine should ship out tonight or tomorrow, didn't mention any delays. Not that I believe them, but it's somewhat reassuring. :) It's shipping from Tennessee (I'm in GA) so I'm glad I didn't pay a faster shipping option. I should get it within 2 days using Ground.

Also, I am setting up some forums for X1000 users/potential users. I'll post the link here once they are up and running, hopefully by this evening. It will be similar to what a member did when the VPR Matrix Deal was around a few months ago. His forums ended up being a great central resource to discuss the laptop, drivers, order experiences, etc.

i called them everyday since 7/7 since ordered on 6/29. everyday they told me tracking numbers will be posted the next day. they told me everything is on schedule, nothing is backordered. they said they are slow with their networks right now since the holiday (july 4th). obviously that can't be true. i think they are a load of crap.

i finally got a couple emails from them. the first one told me my order is delayed for another 15 days. the second one is a coupon for "future purchases". i am going to call in and ask to use that coupon for this purchase since they have been lying to me all along.
