I don't have the exact sub model off hand, but here's the problem. XP got corrupted so I reinstalled it for them, they didn't have the recovery disc so I used a regular XP disc I had laying around. I searched the exact model # on HP's web site and it pointed me to the Nvidia NIC driver, this didn't work. I poked around and found an AIO driver pack with 3 or 4 different NIC drivers on HP's site they claim are for alll Presario 8000. None of them worked. It's showing up in the device manager with the ! next to it, so XP is detecting it.

Before the OS crashed the NIC was working fine, not sure exactly what driver I need but I know nothing HP's directing me me is working at all.

ideas?
thanks

If you search for the exact model number, you will find the correct driver. Since Compaq (HP) updates their lineup every 6 months, the series model alone will not direct you to one specific nic driver.

This is the reason I despise HP/Compaq. They love to change hardware every few months on the same model because they made a deal to get a part cheaper. Then they have trouble telling you what was in your specific model.

Go to the website, plug in the model, then plug an the two or three parts of the serial by playing ABA# hunt on the sticker. Then maybe get a list of what might be in that particular system.

I should have made it clear I did try putting in the serial #, which gave me an Nforce driver. But it didn't work. They have what they say is an AIO for all the 8000 models which has 3 or 4 different drivers in it. None of them work. I'm confused because the NIC was working prior to having to reinstall XP. I looked for any other 8000 model's NIC drivers, and basically everything I've found hasn't worked. The NIC is on board so I can't imagine they offered multiple MB's, but it's telling me it's an Nvidia NIC and that clearly doesn't seem to be the case. I don't have the serial on me right now, but when I get it I'll post it and maybe someone can make sense of shit for me?

If Matt1970's suggestion doesn't work, you may need to do it the hard way.

Look in Device Manager, right-click on the NIC (or unknown device, if it is shown that way), select Properties, then go down to the Property pulldown and select Hardware IDs and copy the results displayed under Value. Do a google search for the hardware ID and it should tell you the source chipset for the NIC. If you get lucky, it will also direct you to a source for the driver needed as well.

Another thing you can do, if you have one, is to temporarily install a USB wireless adapter, a USB to Ethernet adapter, or a PCI/PCIe NIC card that you have drivers for which can be used to get the system online. Then, right click on the missing device in Device Manager and allow Windows Update to search online for a driver to install.

However, though, the system should be one of the ones referenced by the link ch33zw1z provided - it is just a matter of getting the exact model number from the list.

YEAH TO COMPAQ!!!

I dug up the model # and the compaq page doesn't have a NIC driver at all for download. I looked up the serial # and it pointed me to some weird HP product. I ended up searching every every 8xxx model with a NIC driver and downloading it. I'm guessing one of them has to work. I pity anyone who isn't savy with this computer who wants to get the NIC working on a reinstall. I Googled it and there is literally no help to be found.

model # is 8RSXE1 for anyone interested, I'm about to go over and pray that one of the 7 drivers I found will work. I know it's an older desktop but how hard is it to have a damn driver for the damn system?

THANK YOUSE HP!

UUGGGGHHH

After trying every single driver HP had in the Compaq Presario 8000 section of the web site, NONE OF THEM WORKED. The device is still coming up with the ! next to it.

I'm supose to go back tomorrow, if anyone has any suggestion here the damn model numbers 8RSXE1, that's 8RSXE1.

If you still can't get it to work:

-Try booting to a Ubuntu live cd or dvd, and then open a terminal and type "sudo lshw" without the quotes, it may tell you what you have.

-or, just get a PCI NIC for $10...

Based on the model number provided it looks like the unit is using a nForce MCP motherboard where the NIC is built into the chipset and you need to load the chipset drivers to activate it.

Look at the motherboard and see if you can confirm it's an nForce MCP mb. It's probably an MCP61 which was popular back then. If it is you can go here to get the chipset drivers.

Otherwise, do like ch33zw1z said and just buy a new cheap PCI NIC from NE.

YOU NAILED IT!!!!!!

Now uh, I'm not saying I tried this and it worked because I haven't yet. But I had an NF2 MB and remember the drivers were 1 big cluster f*ck where you run 1 EXE and it installs a butt load of stuff. Weird thing is one of the NIC drivers Compaq has for other 8000 models is the NForce ones, and that didn't work. But I do on my NF2 board nothing was separate driver wise.

Thank you for jogging my memory!
