Compaq Presaio Laptop BIOS Trouble????

Laptop : Compaq Presario 12XL300

Ok here is the story. A friend of mine at work brought me his "dead" laptop
to look at. He said it just locked up on him once and now it wont boot up, keeps
locking up. He even tried restore CD and it locks up during installation.
So I formated the hard drive then tried to install XP - locked up before installation completed.
Next I tried Windows ME - locks up before installation is complete.
Next Win98SE - boots up fine (but no video/sound/modem drivers installed)
so I goto Compaqs web site and download the drivers (Yes I made sure I got the correct ones)
And when you load the drivers for any of them it locks up. So I figured that those
newer OS's was probably locking up when they tried to install the drivers thats why 98SE
installed ok.

that leads to to this point. Whats wrong with this thing?? BIOS?
I have checked everything I can think of. Its not overheating or
anything I can do anything I want to on it but if I goto load one of those
drivers it locks up after they load.

Have help bump ect is deeply appreciated.

I would make sure all the fans spin, on laptops it is common for them to lockup/shutdown when they get to hot, then I would try a bios update (if there is one available)

I have tried to find a BIOS update with no luck. I dont think its a fan/heat
problem. I have had it running for over 4 hours with now locks up but you
just try to load a driver and its lights out.

any ideas anyone??? Surely someone out there has an idea or are
you just waiting to see if I post it on the for sale board? 🙂

lol, are you trying to load the drivers from cd, or floppy?
