I'm with brasschimp there. Of course, we work HP tech support together, and he's a dumbass anyways. I work tech support for HP right now, and I definitely recommend them, because if anyone calls, we try to fix it over the phone, and if we can't fix it, we send it in and it gets fixed in like 2 weeks. Compaq sucks out the ass, would never recommend anyone to them. And I'm not saying this because I work for HP, it's because it the TRUTH!!!

Thanks everyone for your input. I know that adding stuff yourself voids a Compaq warranty..is this the case with HP too?

When you add hardware to a HP, it DOES NOT void your warranty. We see it as adding software....you're just adding functionality to your computer.

There is a way to keep the warranty by using a hair dryer :)

Seriously though I've owned both when I was younger ( not smart enough to build), and I'd say HP is a lot better, although the Compaq in house service is nice, their phone tech support is a COMPLETE joke. HP actually seems to care about the customer a little more, which is really important, also most low priced HP's come with 64 MB RAM, so I would try and upgrade ram for him, I think they sell RAM there, and maybe a better video card also.

Also like to mention that I have had 2 HP's and they have lasted for around 4-5 years, no probelms, if I ever had any software probelms ( that I caused), I could just use that repair disc...

<< If you have any oem prebuilt computer opening the case voids warenty >>

Gateway let me open up my case without voiding the warenty. Well it had better not had voided it because the guy on the phone told my mom to open it. =)

Its hard to recommend any oem company I think. I guess I would go HP over compaq.

I would recommend a Compaq over a HP.

The more recent Compaq models are not that bad either, less intergration on the mobo than years ago.

I have an Hp and I bought a CDRW drive as an addition the guarantee is not voided.
I have a custom build PC from HP but be aware the CASE is really small. It's not long enough.
But anything is better than Compaq except for E-Machines perhaps!

I worked at Office Depot over the summer. We had about 75% of our Compaq's returned due to faulty sound cards (integrated), and none of the HP's were returned at all over the time that I worked there (approx 3 months).

the sticker on the HPs is just to see if the computer has been opened to see if they need to check. They check the sticker to see if they should bother looking inside if you stole the CPU or something and tried to return it. Used to have a lot of problems with that.

Ok. I said HP's are all cramped up and sh*t, and said to get a Compaq. We don't even accept Compaqs for servicing. But IMHO is to get a Compaq. Just make sure you get a actual tower. Not a little tiny ass cube.

if I would have those choices, I would go with Compaq. While not being the best computer out there, they still use brand name parts (Matrox G400 for video, Seagate for hard drives, Micron for RAM). Their warranty ain't too bad either.

HP uses, enlight cases, gvc modems, seagate maxtor or quantum hard drives, all motherboards are ASUS , video cards are ASUS (yes i used to sell these), CDROM are teac or goldstar, cdrws are teac or goldstar, powersupplies are deltas (these are the best), dvds are panasonic or goldstar, ram is micron or infineon originals. How can you beat those part?

hans007: Their CD-RW are made by themselves. Many of these people who recommend Compaq dont actually have any experience with HPs, they "think" Compaq have brand name parts, and HP has crappy parts. I suggest anyone w/o actual experience with these two brands stay out of this to prevent spreading false information.

Even though choosing between HP and Compaq is almost the same as no choice, I'd choose the HP over the Compaq (or Compcrap as someone said before :)) since a Compaq only seems to give trouble.

A friend of mine has a Compaq (200 MHz, v. old thus) and he hates the thing.

HK - Although both brands suck you stated that your father really has little choice since it's at Office Depot. I would choose HP over Compaq anyday.

Do us a favor and we can recommend the BEST PC for your father.

Can you and him look at the specs and prices, which Compaq or HP models would he consider? I can lookup several indepth reviews which should be very helpful in your recommendation to your father. Just need the brand name and complete model #.

Whatever you do try and get a somewhat decent powered machine with at least a Pentium III 650 or AMD Athlon 650 or higher.
