Compaq notebook problems

I bought a notebook from a garage sale for $25 its 1999 and it worked fine but then i was using it and later that day i had to turn it off to move it and when i went to turn it back on it said that it was testing the external memory and then it turns off. I cant get past that point. Please give me some advise on how to fix it.

well, there is a reason why its on sale for $25 from a garage sale. theres not mcuh we can do to help you, but try reformatting it. also, check the ram.

When it tests the memory and then shuts down is it running on the Internal Battery or on AC Current? If Battery the battery is dead and needs charging or old and dead. If you have not done this plug it in the wall and then try to boot it. If You are running it on AC Current then something truly is wrong. What brand and model is it?

The Title says Compaq. Is it a Presario?
