IMO, the only thing you need to upgrade is the battery. Upgrading the sempron to a higher clock speed will mean less, since the ram functions at ddr266 I think, so less cache+ an already low bandwith=bad.

Then spend a few dollars on a wireless pc card from newegg and a 512 stick of ram and your all set!
 
OK. So I went to OD to confirm the upgrades prices, which are different than those at http://www.techdepot.com/btoconfig.asp?ss=575&s=BTO4411915&v=40&u=1.

Anybody knows what is this ? ATI RADEON® XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports. From what i found, it adds firewire port, not sure about it, and what else ?

The TechDepot prices are differnet form the BTO in store prices. Yes, kamranziadar the Staples coupon in the link is good through 2006. The Turion was a FREE upgrade with the AMD64/OD $100 rebate so I got it. I added the built-in Wifi & Bluetooth for future Bluetooth devices. I figure that I'll swap the hard drive when the 7200RPM prices come down, but it would have been nice to have a faster HD now. Did I mention that I hate the heavy and lopsided 12 cell battery.

Thanx for the coupon again, but there is no $100 AMD64/OD coupon this time.
Why you hate the battery i think it is good to have 6 hour battery life and thats what laptops are for with out wires.

Thanx "Davinci" for the information about the choices and prices, looks like it is the same deal we had last time except $100 coupon for upgrading to AMD64 Turion.
 
The 12 cell adds 0.7 pounds of extra weight digging into my shoulder strap. The battery sticks out of the bottom but only goes across 3/4 of the width, so when using it on my laptop the battery rests on my right knee while the edge of the battery jabs into my left knee. While it does raise the back of the notebook for better air flow when using it on a flat table, the notebook rests unevenly on my lap and the battery causes my left thigh to BLOCK the fans. They should have made the 12 cell battery run the full width of the lappy, it is a bad design IMHO. I have an AC car
adapter already so power is always near by. Oh well, the briteview widescreen makes a great DVD player for the kids when riding in the minivan.
 
this is an awesome deal for a college kid like myself, hope i can get to the store in time for this deal, anybody know exactly when this deal runs out? i know it does on the first but when exactly on the first? thanks

no reason to be a dick, just wanted to make sure, i have to go a long ways to our office depot and i don't want to make a trip for nothing.
 
this is a really hot deal. basically the exact same laptop as the lance armstrong one with a sempron.


you can always pry the keyboard up and install a new cpu. it should be trivially easy. mobile athlon 64 3000+ cpus go for about $80 on ebay.
 
Turion is better than any athlon 64 for the same price. It will give you more battery life, and runs cool.
And make sure they are socket 754.

the girl was new and accidently gave me three of the office depot $100 mail in rebates, the best thing is that the maximum is three per household, thats how i got it for 450 🙂
 
Just a question. When do they charge you shipping? I just bought two from my local OD, and they did not charge shipping. Do they charge when you get the item?

they are referring to pcmcia cards in the side of the laptop, look for pcmcia cards in newegg for modem, network, firewire, sound, etc.
 
I got this deal last month (in fact, a better one with the AMD 64 rebate). I really think it is a very good deal. The Brightview screen is wonderful. But you need to be patient as it took almost 3 weeks after my order was placed for my laptop to arrive.
 
Ya, I know. From the other thread on the Pavillion, some people waited 4 weeks! Still a great deal. It doesn't matter to me though, since both my laptops are chirstmas gifst 🙂. Heck, if they gave me 70 bucks to ahve the shipping delayed 6 weeks, i'll be ok with that 🙂.

I ordered one of these today. ML-30 turion, CDRW/DVD combo drive, wifi w/ bluetooth, productivity ports, extended battery, $45 shipping, $40 off $200 coupon the nice guy let me use = $650 AR ..

I heard some people were not getting charged shipping at certain locations today at FW! bleh...

I'm worried about if the fan will turn on easilly or randommly with this notebook- not getting much response on it though. Do those who have one here have any input on if the notebook fan runs often and/or loud, and can it be minimized by say.. setting the GPU to 32mb?

Also can those who upgraded their memory tell me where they got theirs and the part#'s? The notebook seems to be very picky about the memory it uses =(
