i have an old compaq 5wv270

the max memory it should be able to hold is 768mb

there are 3 slots i put in a stick of 256mb and 128mb....but it only recognizes 128mb

why does this happen?

What type of memory? Did you use the memory selector at crucial.com?

If it uses SDRAM, you probably bought cheap "high density" memory that the motherboard can't recognize. Or it could be a bad stick.
