Compaq laptop problems .. keyboard

Weird things happening with this compaq laptop.. there's a "discplay" led light at the bottom of the keyboard. When the discplay light is on, the keyboard is non-functional, and an external keyboard must be hooked up. The discplay led is for playing CDs while the computer is turned off, btw. For a while, that light would eventually go off, and the keyboard would would work, but now the light is "stuck on" and the keyboard won't work.

I realize that this problem probably isn't caused by the discplay light staying on, but it is probably just a symptom. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I'm tempted to pop off the keyboard panel and see if all the wires are connected properly.. no shorts, etc.
