Compaq will be dropping prices on their iPaq computers from $599 and $499 to $399 and $299 (not including the $100 rebate). Starts on Sunday, don't know retailers... so here's what you can get:

· 32 MB SyncDRAM, 16 MB Flash Memory
· 10.1" Flat Panel Color Display
· Four USB Ports
· 56K V.90 Internal Modem 2
· Wireless Keyboard
· Powered by MSN? Companion 3

iPaq A-2 (regular monitor) $299 - $100 rebate = $199
· 32 MB SyncDRAM, 16 MB Flash Memory
· 15" Color Display (VIA 13.7")
· Two USB Ports, with the freedom to add a printer2

I would download the rebate today before it vaporizes...

Don't know if they can be networked. Great kitchen device. Perhaps a hack? Enjoy!

There's some hack potential in here (at least the LCD model, I am not too familiar with the other one.) There is 16MB flash ROM and a CompactFlash slot. K6-2 266 processor. You could probably get a Win9x or linux install on a decent-sized (64MB) CompactFlash and boot from that.

Pros: 4 USB ports, decent processor
Drawbacks: No IDE connector, only 16MB RAM (not upgradeable)

How about using a USB hard drive and a USB NIC? Of course, it looks like Compaq has got new versions of these that are networkable.. Looks like these run the "MSN Companion" software, not any real OS. "This product only works with the MSN service"
