I had an older Compaq v5000 That was stolen, I still have the 18 disk set that i backed up the computer with. If i purchase another v5000 will i be able to transfer the data off of the restore disk or is this backup method limited to the original machine. Im not looking for a lot data or programs off of these restore disk mainly just some old pictures.

If you're talking about the recovery disk set, it may only restore the original OS and installed software, but not your own files.

The designation, "Compaq v5000" actually includes a number of models. It may help if you knew the exact model of your old machine.

HP tech support may be able to help. Even if the machine is out of warranty, they may help you through their online chat system. If you have the serial number of your machine, they may even have a record of whether someone else, presumably the thief, contacted them for help.

P.S. If you were talking about the recovery disk set, next time, use DVD's, instead of CD's. It only takes around three DVD's, instead of 18 CD's.

Good luck. 🙂
