Compaq battery problem

I just reinstalled windows on a compaq presario laptop. Now the battery doesn't seem like it will hold a charge. Whenever I take the Ac adapter out the laptop turns off. A friend of mine said something about a battery firmware? I appreciate any help, the battery was working fine before the format.
 
No battery firmware that I've ever heard of.

Did you use the same OS (i.e. format XP to XP)?

I would shut down, remove the battery, connect AC, boot up, and put battery in while running. Go to Control Panel --> Power Settings and see if the battery is recognized.
