I don't regard this is suck, though I'm not a big fan of Compaq myself. This isn't their old propietary garbage, you know.

They are ok for the average user. If you want to add things to it or tweak it you are better off building one yourself. For someone like my dad it would be fine.

They had this at staples about a week ago. You pricematched it down from $649 to $549 and then used a coupon. From there there was a $100 staples rebate which has since expired. Bottom line it was $449 w/o coupon.

There may still be a compaq rebate on this system, you'll have to check the model number against the compaq website to see.

This isn't one of those, "Only $499, but only have you sign a contract for 36 months of MSN internet access" type deals is it?

It's not a bad system.
Compaq learned from the first run in the white fruity cases not to have every app start in the system tray out of the box

At least it has a AGP slot

CollegeGuy & Vescica - Awesome deal, thanks. I have a co-worker who is looking for a cheap PC and this fits the bill perfectly.

Yes Compaq is suck but they are better than they used to be. What do you expect for $449?

It may be too late but Staples (at least in my town) had a "while they are left" sale on the Compaq 254 for $619.99 minus $170 Staples rebate and $50 Compaq rebate for a net of $400.

I went in when they opened at one of the store in my town and got the only one they had.

And I think it is awfully hard to build a computer with a 20 gig hard drive, Duron 700 mhz processor, TNT2 8 mb video card, cd-rom drive, motherboard and floppy for $400.

compaq does suck, but for the price, it is worth it.
You can always upgrade whatever pieces you want in the system so "compaq [doesn't] suck".

Now...this is not an ENDORSEMENT of Compaq...I like building rather than settling on pre-built, but...

I had the CSR call Compaq support from the store, and let me speak to them on the phone right there. I asked every question I could come up with before buying the setup.

a) It can be upgraded to a T-Bird 1000mhz with no bios change.
b) 3 DIMM slots (not 2)
c) Only sound is integrated, nothing else.

It's not anything to brag about, but guys, some people need a basic rig. One that CAN be upgraded a bit. It's not bad at all...

Just my $.02

I sent a friend to pick one of the up yesterday, he came home with the 750 Duron for the same price.
The guy at the store gave him the better computer because they only had 1 or 2 when the sale started. It does come with the same specs, except a 30gb hard drive and faster chip.

Just fyi,
