Compaq 2199US and BSOD

I can't even get into windows, I can only get into safemode. This happened twice with my compaq 2199us after I installed a netgear wg511. Is there something with the netgear and the compaq that make it crash like that? I can't figure out how to get back into windows, while it's loading windows the only thing it will do is crash, and than restart forever. Anyone have any solutions on how to fix it?

I little light on the details. What is a 2199US? What is a netgear WG511? Have you tried uninstalling the hardware? Have you tried reinstalling windows? Do you see a BSOD or does it just reboot? If it just reboots, disable auto-reboot and post what the BSOD error is.

The 2199US is the compaq computer that I have, and the netgear wg511 is my wireless card. I can't even get into windows, so I can't uninstall the hardware. I removed the WG511 card, but I really don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling windows. It happened before, and I reinstalled windows, but than I installed the card again and the same problem. It gives me the BSOD and than just reboots. I wonder if the option to not reboot is in my bios.

My brother just bought a 2199s with all the rebates and let me borrow it for a weekend trip. I ended up buying a Microsoft 802.11b PCMCIA card for $20 at Best Buy...setup took a couple minutes and I've had absolutely NO problems with it.

helpful hint: compaq is made of recycled animals

in other words, get rid of the damn thing completely if you can

buy something else, you will thank yourself down the line. compaq makes pretty bad computers and doesn't have good customer service either

if you can't do that, reformat and do a clean install of xp.

The problem is I did reformat and did a clean install of XP. Ahh, I just can't figure it out.

Do I have to disable the onboard lan to use the wireless card?

I don't think you do...I was traveling this weekend and my first hotel in Baltimore had wireless, which is where I used the MS card, and my second hotel in DC had ethernet only, and both worked fine...I left the MS card in while I had the CAT5E plugged in, no problems.

I'd say...do a clean install using your discs, then back it up using Ghost so you can install quicker later if you need to. Then get an MS card, or some other brand. I didn't need a G card, so I got B, which was way cheaper, but you might need it.

Also, did you try downloading the latest software from Netgear? If you're running it off the disc that came with the card, it might have bugs etc.

You can uninstall the hardware in safe mode, but only if the hardware is plugged in. To disable auto-reboot go to: My Computer->Properties->Advanced->Start up/Recovery and uncheck "Automatically reboot on error". I assume you are installing the latest drivers off the web, not the one's from the disk that came with the card. Another thing you can do is hit F8 while booting. One of the options will be to list drivers are they load. You can see which driver is causing the problem. I believe there is another boot option that will ask you to confirm before loading each driver. Once you know which driver is causing the problem, you can opt not to load that one. Perhaps you can get the computer into normal windows.
Let's see so far you've been told to: 1) Buy a new laptop and 2) Buy a new wireless card. Let's hope we can solve this problem without spending more money.

Both the card and the laptop are new. Lets hope we can solve it without buying both. I don't have a floppy can ghost make a boot CD instead of a boot floppy? It won't even get to windows, while it's booting up with the starting windows XP, it crashes. Ahh, I'm sure theres a solution, I just don't have it.

Thank you for your help, I have the error message.

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

This is definitely a software issue. You could try doing a system restore back to a checkpoint saved before you installed the netgear drivers. At least you'd be back to a working system.
A few other questions. Was there a driver listed anywhere on the BSOD? When you installed the wireless card did you install the software first? What version of the drivers are you using (2.5.0.2 are the latest)?

Heh, one time I used 2.5.0.2, and than I also used 1.0.6.0 hoping to fix the problem. Both times I had the problem, let me try usin ga different version this time.

Well netgear sucks. I'm using the software v1.6, and it still crashes. I can't figure this out, the only thing I know is netgear sucks.

Edit: Compaq also sucks.

At this point I would do a system restore to get my system working again, then call netgear tech support (don't know if it is any good) and have them guide you through the install. If it still fails, try to take the card back to the store for a refund and get a different brand. Good luck!

Yea, I did system restore. I'm done with this card. I ended up cutting out the UPC because of the rebate so I'm screwed in that, but maybe I can sell it to someone and it will work for them. I wonder if the microsoft ones are any better.

Well I bought a Linksys wireless G card, and guess what guys? Lucky me has the exact same problem. It's official, compaq sucks.

Reformatted and used the latest Linksys drivers, not off of the cd and it works.
