Company of Heroes Patch Question

I just ordered a copy of Company of heroes off ebay (game and key, no box or manual) and was doing some reading about the patch sequence...ect on some other forums.

I came across a couple posts about having an online account or you can't play the game...i.e. you need internet access.

that is fine for me for most of the time...but I might be trying to play it where I don't have an internet connection...which would defeat the single player component if I have to log into an online account to even get the game to work...

Can anyone verify this? And if it is required is there a certain patch level that this started at? i.e. can I just update the game to a certain patch level to get around this?

I am not certain, but I believe one time THQ's servers were down and after a little while trying to authenticate, it asked me to insert my disc instead. So it ought to still work, it just uses as CD check in lieu of logging in.
 
so that is it? wait until the authentication fails? Is the authentication default on the general release of COH? or was it instituted at a specific patch level?
 
In my experience, that only happened with Opposing Fronts where you have to have an online account (or just insert the disc) to play offline
