The idea is that it is in a locked room of my house and totally safe and secure. I could store my tax and business records on it.

Not to mention, you would still be at risk of fire, etc. External hard drive in a fire proof safe at home, and an additional 8gb flash drive in a safe deposit box would have you pretty well covered, and for cheaper as well...

Or save a lot of trouble and money and get a NAS for $150 or so (excluding HDD).

The idea is that it can be securely locked away (in a safe, perhaps) but still accessed. If I want it cut off, I just cut the power to the access point.

Wireless in a safe probably isn't going to work. Plus the ventalation will be nill and I've seen computers die from this. A remote solution like stated above (portable HD, thumb/pocket drive) would be the best as it will save power (not be on 24/7/365) and would have less of a chance of dying (on/active only when used) than a system running full time.
