i upgraded my old compaq from a 300mhz celly to a 400mhz celly processor and now it wont boot. its a compaq 04C4H motherboard with intel i440LX chipset. the fans spin and hard drive makes a few noises but nothing appears on the moniter. i tried the old 300mhz and it works. why wont the 400mhz processor work?

Maybe there's a set of jumpers to change, or maybe the motherboard doesn't support 400Mhz processors. Do you happen to have any detailed documentation that shows jumper settings?

no the computer is really old. i dont even know what happened to the manual. would there be any documentation pdf's somewhere around the web?

Maybe find the serial number on the computer and head over to Compaq's site with it, see if you can nail it down there 🙂 But keep in mind that a CPU upgrade is an unusual thing to happen to a Happy Meal? computer, so you may want to just keep it at 300MHz and count your blessings.

mine is a compaq presario 5020. im a little confused. does my model even support 400mhz processors? if so then what do i have to do with the jumpers? by the way, mechBgon, you've been a big help🙂
Good searching skilz you got there 🙂 Unfortunately it does enumerate the jumper settings for the 5020's motherboard and they seem to stop at 333MHz! 🙁 I think you might have to find another home for your 400MHz Celeron. Sorry about that 🙁
