Comp USA brand 2x DVD-R 50 pack sale AVOID at all cost!

In this weeks ad at Comp USA they have listed thier own Comp USA brand of 2X DVD-R spindle 50 pack dvds for $19,95.

Good deal you might think.. well its not. In actuality, the wrapper on the outside of the spindle says 2X when infact the media they are selling is ONLY 1X speed. Dont get caught by their scam! Bring the media back, unopened or not, and request either a refund or instore credit!!!!

I called around to other stores this morning after returning mine last night and they have pulled most of their stocks off the shelves.

Folks, this is MISadvertisement on their part, dont be scammed!

No im positively sure. Infact, the guys at my store took them and ran a test on it and it showed the dvd-Rs were 1X. Maybe there are certain shipments of these that are packed correctly with 2X and some that are mispackaged? I got the 1X version, the store manager even confirmed to me after they tested them in back when i was waiting.

And no, its not my drive... I have the pioneer DVR-AO7XLB and it is flashed with the most recent firmware.

All i am saying is make SURE they are 2X, if not, bring them back

Did you get charged a 15% restocking fee to return the opened pack of DVD-Rs? CompUSA earned $3.00 from me for my mistake.

No they did not charge me a restocking fee at all. I called them on their mistake and they were very happy to give me a refund. I have a feeling Comp USA KNEW about this issue, most customers buying dvd-rs dont know their head from their butt and will easily fall for a mispackage scam. Thats why im informing ppl to CHECK if infact their media is the correct 2X! 🙂

I would say you gave them $3. There's no way I would have let them charge me a restock fee for their mistake.

They burn at 2x for me in mu NU 8x burner.
I'll give you that they are crappy Princo media, but
they do burn at their rated speed. (2x)

Princo DVD-R media = crap. CompUSA house-brand media = crap. crap * crap = crap ^ 2!

Reminds me of the time that I bought a 25-spindle of 2X-rated house-brand CompUSA CD-RW media. It turns out, that it was 4X CD-RW media that failed quality testing (disc hubs and ATIP info both indicated 4X), so they just slapped them in a cardboard box labeled as 2X and sold them. Those were probably close to the most unreliable CD media that I've ever used. The only way that they were moderately reliable, was to burn "virgin" media at 2X, and never re-write it. After about 5 re-writes they were toast.

I also used to buy their 6x-rated CD-R media too, in the red+white 50-pack and 100-pack spindles, when it was on sale for only $0.50/disc. This was half the price of any other CD-R media at the time, and there was a reason for it. Got nearly 40-50% coaster rate, until I had burned through a few spindles and decided to try some higher-quality media, and had far fewer problems. Also, the topcoat layer on those, was just ink printed over the reflective layer itself, no second protective-lacquer topcoat, so that the reflective layer would simply just "flake off" after some time, if the discs were even slightly mishandled.

CompUSA house-brand media is bottom-of-the-barrel, believe me.

i've nearly gone thru 40 of these so far on my current batch, and they burn at 4x on my toshiba 5112, and that drive is really picky on media.

i love them

Interesting. What are the Media IDs on those? Are those Princo, or something else? Did they come in the same "CompUSA 2X DVD-R" packaging, or did you actually buy 4X media?

your burner sucks, stop blaming the media. nec 2500a burned em just fine. my old old old sony s530d dvd player played the disc just fine. burned it at 2x

My Pioneer A06 sees the discs as 1x, but my LiteOn 851S sees them as 2x (I just patched the firmware to burn these at 1x and 2x). 2x burning is a little flaky: about 1 in 4 has error(s) near the end on playback on my 2 standalone DVD players, but verifies fine in Nero. The discs I burn at 1x work fine virtually all the time.

I bought 2 of the $8 20 packs they had a few weeks ago (same white printed top as the 50 pack spindles) and one of the discs had a BIG DENT in it. Not exactly a sign of good QA...

I have actually bought a lot of compusa 1x media and agree that this was originally 1x media, or atleast it looks exactly the same, but it has always burned at 2x for me, even when it was advertised as 1x. Never had any problems and never a coaster that wasn't my own fault. I will say that the 50 pack I just bought was the worst pack I have gotten, the first 2 were scratched out of the package, but I figured I would use those for disposable storage. Otherwise, they seem to be working fine. I also have an nec-1300a, so that might be why it works, NECs seem to like this media.

i guess you just one of the unlucky ones. My nec worked great, and so far 2 disc burned without any errors.

My Optorite sees them as 1x also. Total crap media. I got a 5 pack a while ago and got 4 coasters out of 5 disks.

I've burned 100+ on my A06 @ 2x. No coasters, plays fine on 3 settop dvd players, two portables, and 3 dvd drives. For me it's cheap, covenient, and reliable.

Anyone with a pioneer DVD writer who wants to burn the CompUSA DVD-R (Princo) at 2x

Get with the program and flash your drives

http://forum.firmware-flash.com/

I re-flashed my Pioneer DVD writing on my emachines M6807.

I now rip 3x faster and burn 2x no problems with Compusa $20 Princo DVD-R Princo paks

My 2500A burns them at 2x...and for so cheap I can't complain. They play my PS2 backups, haven't tried movies yet. I'm happy.

If they knew about the issue, then why would they take the items off their shelves at other stores??

After i called them on their foulup of repacking 1X media with a 2X wrapper, then the next day proceded to call around to the other local stores in my area and they had pulled the rest off the shelves a day later. Not that it matters... they prolly sold 1000's of units and no one is the wiser.... like i said before, most ppl buying dvd r media dont know much about it anyway and will never notice that they are burning at 1x instead of what they paid for- so-called 2x media, like the wrapper says.

I realize some of you have reported that they work fine and burn at 2x. Great, good for you. Im just saying that there might be lots of units out there (like mine!) that only were 1X media! So to those folks that have the 1X version, bring em back!
