Comp Tech is Stumped?! Having an off day...

Yo. I'm usually an expert on these things but for some reason I need a second opinion. So i'm getting the motherboards in, I always ground myself on the case, I dont' bother using those brass pedestal screws ever and i connect the jumpers. Fan Spins once, I don't even see the Ram light light-up. I have to build 3 comps. I ordered the cpu's from one place and two motherboards from EWIZ, the third from Newegg. The first two comps i put together don't even post, i take the ram out...nothing, no ide, agp nothing... No Bios Beeps. NOTHING...I know the Cpu's or Mobo's are defective but i'm in denial. Anything i can do to test which one is the culprit besides testing it on another mobo (which i don't have) I have all Intel boards, these are AMD Cpu's and mobo's. Any suggestions?

Tried a new one out of the box on all three of them. All three are new PSU's included in the case. POWMAX.

What are the system spec's for one. I would have to agree that the power supply's are probably bad.

Just how in the hell do you get the back plate to line up if you dont use the standoffs?

Everything is NIB. Just purchased.... 3 POWMAX PSU's that were included in the cases were new and just for the hell of it i pulled another PSU NEW out of the box and tried it...NO DICE. Two Amd 2000xp's and one 2400xp . Two Elitegroup mobo's and one Gigabyte mobo. You want the model #'s?

How about a answer to my question? I have built probably 120 machines and have never seen one that would work without the standoffs.

I did answer your question. I've only had to use the standoffs a handful of times, it usually works without them. There are some that work without the standoffs.

Uhhh... two problems.

1) Powmax PSUs :p

2) The underside of a motherboard is covered with protruding pins from its various soldered-on parts and components. The standoffs exist to keep those away from the case's metal motherboard tray so they don't short-circuit. Try using them. Whatever time you save by not installing them is long gone now, ain't it ;)

I guess, Are the circuits fried now or has the system's protection protected itself or C) Is it upto the bitchiniess off the components and i'll find out when i try it?

Be optomistic :D I've had stuff short out for other reasons and survive.

it seems to me the lack of stand offs might be the cause...
the mobos making contact to the case is a big no no if i member correctly... specially if you have them on or around and static producing items that touch the case, which is touching the mobo.

Uh....laying the motherboard in the case without standoffs will short out the whole thing. You're simultariously connecting every piece of metal on the back.
You've fried them probably.

Eyyyyyepppppp eyyepppp... I've only had this prob a few times and now i know why. LOL... Thanks :). It never really turned on but still comps are tempermental. I'll find out tommorow and i'll let all ya kno ;) I hope they work, cuz i got 3 customers up my ass and i'd hate to make them wait for RMA's... Also any way to test Cpu's and mobo's w/o exchanging parts?

With out standoffs?!!!!! You wouldn't happen to be building With These cases would you?

I think mobos have protection for stuff like not putting standoffs. I did that b4 (dumb me) and when i put the standoffs on it worked perfectly.

Yep! Looks like the case may be the trigger here. I've built systems with cases that had risers pressed into the metal where stand offs could not be used. I hated the thought of laying a new board in there even with risers. I now look for cases where stand offs are a must. Give it a shot and see. ;)

You are actually building computers for people??? Man I am glad I am not one of your customers. Sorry if it sounds kind of harsh but it doesn't really seem like you know what your doing. Never build another system without the proper motherboard standoffs! They will indeed short out and be dead in about 2 seconds. If you learn nothing else of value from this post at least you know one more important thing about building computers and that is to NEVER BUILD A COMPUTER WITHOUT STANDOFFS. There is another good reason for using the standoffs too, it will keep you from cracking the motherboard. Certain places on some motherboards are intended to be slightly elevated because some componets portrude underneath the motherboard a little bit and if you dont have standoffs then they touch the motherboard tray and the places where you put the screws have to bend in order to tighten down thus causing them to potentially crack. Just so you dont feel bad I did the same thing to my first motherboard back in the 486 days. Good luck with your future builds.

P4EXTREME, gotta agree with that... man Im really dumbfounded you never bothered to look on the bottom of your board to see the hundreds of little pins protruding through the motherboard and didnt think they might touch the metal case. You think a case manufacturer would package standoffs and raise their manufacturing costs if it wasnt necessary, those standoffs arent packed with it for your entertainment. (not only that but your actually charging people to build computers). (Im not trying to be mean but am in awe)

Welll.....I've troubleshooted and haven't been building...Have been getting more sales now..Will definetly use the standoffs. Thanks everyone!! Turns out all is well except on one mobo the ps/2 ports are shorted out. Everything else works fine!! :)

I was about to say the same thing.

I had one tech bring me a system which would not power one. When I opened the case I saw he installed the motherboard without standoffs AND he had the pink motherboard foam lined under the motherboard! He told me he's been an electrician for 20 years and that he didn't need standoffs and the foam insulates and protects the motherboard. Good grief. He sure looked like a dummy when I took the foam off and installed standoffs and the system powered up.

wow.....
To be honest, if you dont intuitively understand that solder joints on the backside of the motherboard (or on any electronic device) should NOT contact metal, you should really and i stress REALLY not be building computers for other people.
