Comp takes a really long time to shutdown

From the moment I hit Start > Shutdown, the computer takes 1 1/2 - 2 minutes to bring up the window asking you to "Standby, Restart, or Shutdown". Once I select Shutdown, it takes another 3-5+ minutes to fully shutdown.

I have no anti-virus software running in background. I have tried disabling the NVIDIA Disply Driver service, no luck.

Any ideas?

What OS?
Same thing in safe mode?

Could be a software running in the background. Remove all startup items in MSCONFIG's STARTUP tab. Retest. It should not take more than about 6 seconds to shutdown on a properly tuned PC.

Anti-virus software!!!

On my PC, XP triples the shutdown time when I installed ZoneAlarm anti-virus software. Still I think I need AV.

Have you installed any software and configured that software to "clear the pagefile on shutdown"? That'll cause a long delay in shutdown times.

I think it was something as simple as an item under startup that was causing it. I'm down to about 20 sec. shutdown time, which is much better. Thanks!

Knew it couldn't be that simple...still having the problem. The only processes I have running ATM are Windows (MSN) Messenger, and usually Google Desktop. Also something called ctfmon.exe always pops up under processes and MSCONFIG startup, but I think it's something related to MS Office. Pretty sure it's not a virus.

I still have the problem even if I shut them down. I have not tried shutting down in safe mode, I will have to try that when I get back.

ctfmon is fine, it is needed to run certin things. i have it listed on all my machines. why no AV? are you mad! witht the sate of the internet, everyone needs it.

I don't use Anti Virus either and have been virus free for about 1 year (I do at least use AVG and nod32 every 2 months to make sure.)

M$ released a little program to help XP shut down a bit faster:

Also, CTFmon is not a required component and I've also run fine on multiple machines for 2 years without it running. Here's how to disable it:
What Does the Ctfmon.exe File Do?
Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies.

Can I Remove the Ctfmon.exe File?
Removing the Ctfmon.exe might cause problematic behavior in your Office XP programs, so removing it is not recommended. To prevent Ctfmon.exe from running, follow these steps.

That's for an open profile issue, and not really for shutdown issues. If there are issues when he logs off, that's a possible thing to try, but for shutdown issues, I'd first like to see what happens in safe mode.

I'd also like to see what filters are installed. Can the OP run mpsreports (see my .sig) and get me the computername.cab file that gets made?

Ok,

In safe mode everything seems to be fine, but heres the thing. Even in normal mode, when I first restart or turn on the computer and then try to Start > Shutdown, everything works fine and it shuts down in about 15-20 seconds. If I restart and wait at least an hour or so....it starts having the hangup issues.

So, I have not tried to restart in safe mode and wait a good while to see if it still happens, which I probably should. As of right now though, safe mode or normal mode, if I shutdown soon after booting up, it's no problem. But if the computers been on for a while, it takes 7-10 minutes to fully shutdown.

Also, dclive, I have done the MPSrpts and e-mailed you the entire zip file it creates. Thanks!

I have no idea what this is, but this is the first thing I'd look at removing.

Module[192] [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\TETRIS.SYS]
File Size (bytes): 48928
File Date: Thu Mar 30 21:40:41 2006
Module has NO symbols!

Second is this:

Module[ 71] [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ITHSGT.SYS]
File Size (bytes): 162432
File Date: Sun Oct 16 14:52:29 2005
Module has NO symbols!

Can you even see either of these files when you look for them in the Windows Explorer interface?

Please tell me you were kidding about not running antivirus and antimalware software. Go to the store, buy Symantec AV (latest release, just the AV, not the full 'everything' suite), download Windows Defender from Microsoft.com right now, and let us know the results. I have a guess that these are rootkit files, and it's possible you've been hacked.

More:
Module[ 17] [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\BANTEXT.SYS]
File Size (bytes): 3840
File Date: Thu Apr 07 17:18:34 2005
Module has internal symbols only!
Internal COFF Symbols - Size 0x00000545 bytes
Internal FPO Symbols - Size 0x00000040 bytes

...hmm...odd they don't say what it is in the description, but that's Belarc Advisor. Very poor labelling!

Update your Logitech mouse drivers to something in the last year -- what you have looks ancient.

More odd drivers:
Module[ 81] [C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\LILSGT.SYS]
File Size (bytes): 12032
File Date: Sun Oct 16 14:52:29 2005
Module has NO symbols!

Running a Wintel box on the internet and with unknown programs and no AV is foolish. Please fix this problem immediately.
