Comp show sale tomorrow, you choose what I should get!

I don't really want to spend a lot of cash.. I'm just looking for something new to play with on my comp, really... I'm debating a P4 1.6 @ 2.2GHz with the Asus DDR motherboard (don't know the model off hand), but that would wipe my checking account clean if I get 512MB with it. So I don't know...

My current setup is about 1.5 years old or so. It's a 1.1GHz TBird (orig), Abit KT7 (KT133), GF3 Ti200, IBM 40GB 60GXP, InWin Q500, Sparkle 300W, 256MB PC133, 128MB PC100, SB Live Value, 3Com 10/100, Sony 17" Trinitron, Plex 16x, Asus 50x, Creative 5x DVD-ROM.. and a mouse/keyboard I love.

Spare parts I have: MSI K7T Pro2, 300W PSU, 13" Mag monitor, 3 extra keyboards, 1 optical mouse, 1 intellimouse ball, SB 16 ISA.

Maybe I should get a cheap case and TBird <1GHz and build a new server in addition to the P3 450 I have at work? Well, let's hear it.

BTW: Link for the show is at www.greatmidwestcomputershow.com and it's pretty big. You can find almost anything there, except the monitors are sh!tty and quality RAM is hard to find, as are high end SCSI peripherals.. mainly if it's hard to find at newegg it'll be hard to find at this show.

...lol...you're bored...

sounds like a plan seeing as how you have parts in that direction..besides I do not believe those 300w PSUs are P4 compatabile(sp?)...what about a g/f 😕 you would not be having this discussion...hehe...you'd be broke 😀

Since you're after a toy, I suggest buying something you can play with - like a neat joystick, mouse, keyboard, scanner or other input device.

Or neat output devices like an obscure video card or pro sound card.

Perhaps something you wouldn't normally buy for your own system? Something a little "different". Look for the smallest, quietest system you could put together. Small mobos/cases....

EDIT: It does appear a motherboard/CPU combo WOULD be good for you.... Yeah - see what kind of deal you can get on a CPU/mobo/RAM combo.
Don't rule out the P4! See what deals you can get! Keep an eye out for some of the brand new, very cool motherboards with tons of nice, integrated stuff like USB 2.0 and FireWire, etc.

Good thinkin'

Maybe a digital camera.. and I can save up for a 19".. 😀

What are some good digital cameras for $250 - $500?

Buy your stuff from Newegg, and not at the show. It'll cost you ~$15 just to get in the door for parking and admission. Comp shows are filled with fly-by-night comp dealers and you MAY have a hard time with RMA's if something you buy turns out not to work. Their prices won't beat Newegg, especially if your're looking for quality RAM, which is impossible to find at comp shows.

The only reason to go to a show is if you're looking for a processor with a specific stepping or build date. With T-birds anyway, it's like buying a diamond. Last summer I picked up a 1Ghz AXIAR w/Y this way and it runs at 1.4Ghz and cost $80 (+parking & admin). Back then, a 1.4Ghz chip was $140+.

Memory, cases and PSU's at the show are usually crap. And don't even think about getting a quality heat-sink-fan, as all they sell is junk. You can get the top-of-the-line vid or sound card, but you'll pay a top-of-the-line price too! I don't mean there are no bargins at the shows, but know your prices and brand names before hand, as many dealers will have one cheap component on the table, and the rest of the stuff will be overpriced. It pays to shop around, and bring cash if you want the best price (although it won't provide you the security a credit card can if you have problems).

Suggestion:Auction Athlon and motherboard as well as RAM and powersupply as a set locally.increase=220$

Buy 1.6A, MSI Asus P4S533 motherboard (For future 533 FSB support) and 256 MB of DDR and a new P4 compliant power supply. net loss=410$ Upgrade RAM later.

Net expenditure is 190$
Spend the rest on games or ajoystick or digital camera or whatever

Second option is to use the Athlon as a server

Net expenditure for this option is around 500$ since you must purchase a harddisk.
Spend the rest on whatever ya want. 🙂

Both plans are *very* good. You might want to *sell* your computer parts at the show, you know.. to a vendor. If you choose my first mentioned method. Easiest way of dumping your old Mobo/CPU/RAM/powersupply combo.
