Comp restarted out of nowhere

while i was doing something, a very simple task. i only had windows explorer open, the computer just shut down without the windows screen, i mean just shut down to black, then restarted. i have a battery back up so i know the power didnt flicker. ive had few second power outs before and it didnt shut down the computer. maybe my battery back up is starting to fail? or could it be the power supply is bad? i have very good ventilation and i replaced all my fans and used aftermarkets coolers and all that. i dont want this to happen again when im doing something critical and then my work gets erased. this never ever happened before.

What are your system specs? I'd guess power supply without knowing anything else or possibly a bad stick of memory. Was there any error message?

no error messages, it just simply went to black.

640 intel
1 gig ram
74gig raptor hdd
antec p160 case
enermax whisper II 460 power supply
1 cd rom
radeon x1800xt 512
intel mobo

i dont think im overpowering the psu cause i dont have that many components and i wasnt doing anything intensive at the time at all. maybe it just became faulty? should i maybe send it in to fix?

now that i think about it, it might have done that after playing WoW for a while. but it was at least 5-10 minutes after playing, so i dont think that could have been the case. WoW isnt that graphic intensive anyway especially for this video card.

maybe i can use some sort of utility to check if the power supply is in good working order? like check the rails or something?

You can use motherboard monitor or the equiv utility from your mobo manfacturer to read the rails. Better a multimeter though.

Don't worry now, worry if it happens again. You probably just kicked a cable or something.

youre right, if it happens again, then ill look into it further as long as the below figures are in the clear, then i dont have anything to worry about. this is what the intel desktop utilities said.

Voltage
+12 V 12.188
+5 V 5.182
+3.3 V 3.352
CPU Core 1.235
CPU I/O (+1.5 V) 1.484

Yeah...I had the same problem, I found out that while tapping my foot (waiting for Bf2 to load), I kicked my power strip, it restarted, as did my comp, just try to space yourself from the computer power cable or strip.
